June 29, 2011: Self Inspired

Do you like the progression of curly hair? First day it is down, then half up, then all up. If I don't do something drastic (like wash it) there is going to be some craziness! Or I will just put it up in a ponytail again but, I digress...

When trying to plan out today's outfit I wasn't really struck with any great ideas until I caught a glimpse of this skirt hanging in my closet. I remembered that fun combo that I wore the other night to go out and thought why not do something similar for today? I could have gone with the same exact thing and just thrown a blazer over it (that is allowed by the rules) but, that would be too easy. Maybe I'll save that for another day... How do you make your weekend looks work for the professional/academic world? Is there even a need for you to differentiate?

June 28, 2011: The Easy Way Out

As the weather heats up in New York I find myself heading to the other side of my closet: Dress (and Skirt) Land. It is just so much more convenient to throw a dress over my head or slide a skirt on and head out the door. Plus, it can still be super professional if need be... How do you keep yourself cool in the warm weather while still staying professional?

June 14, 2011: Everybody, Everywhere is Loving Lace

Lace | Everybody, Everywear

I haven't participated in alot of these Everybody, Everywear things but, I am going to try to stay more on top of it. There is another reason besides my bad timing; I haven't really been super into everything they have selected. I'm only going to wear things that I like on my body and already have in my closet. Today, I can definitely get on board with lace. I don't think it's the easiest thing to wear in an everyday capacity but, when it's done well it's really lovely, I can't wait to see what Everybody, Everywear comes up with!

  • Top: teal corsage embellished t-shirt, Merona via Target (not to be confused with this one) with a tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Bottomgray lace skirt, Tara Jarmon for Target
  • Shoes & Accessoriessilver cutout flats, Merona via Target; silver bead earrings, Tiffany & Co.; yellow alley bag

Featured: Clothed Much

I know many of you people might have found your way to me through my participation in Clothed Much's Rule Breaking Monday. It's actually one of my favorite blog projects to participate in because of challenge it presents to all of the participants, "think outside of the box!" I guess I really got it this past week because I was the winner for my pajamas at work look! Thanks Elaine! Check out everyone else's rule breaking looks at Clothed Much on Mondays...

June 9, 2011: Remain Neutral

Guys, it is going to be 100°!! Well, not quite yet but, it will be by the afternoon. With all this heat I struggled to put an outfit together that was office appropriate but, wouldn't melt me. Ironically, I have been trying wear blazers all week and make that work for the summer but, it's just too hot!

In that arduous search I discovered another summer staple of professional wear that I am missing, traditional cardigans! I have three, honestly (this one, this one, and this one.) I also realized that the cardigan is the best alternative to the blazer during the warmer month when they are out of the question unless you want to fade from heat stroke trying to make it to your air conditioned office building. I know, I know 2 + 2 = 4... Do you have any other blazer alternatives that you utilize during the summer?

  • Top: brown tank top, New York & Company with another tank top underneath for the modesty; gray ruffle trim cardigan, LOFT/birthday gift from BF's parents
  • Bottom: black capri pants, New York & Company

June 8, 2011: Seen This Before, Almost

Update: I Complete You Product Challenge

Deodorant is expensive in my opinion so when I come across the kind I like to use on sale in a buy two get one free back I jump all over it. I should buy multiples of those too! No wait, that's what got me into this situation...  But, in the end it is more a necessity that 75 bazillion bottles of lotion from Bath & Body Works! I know, I know: I'm just rationalizing...

June 7, 2011: Wishing For Double

Do you have things in your wardrobe that you wish you had bought multiples of? Or do buy multiples of? Not in different colors or patterns; I'm talking about actually purchasing two for the same exact thing for when the first one eventually falls apart due to consistent use. Well, I have learned my lesson regarding that. When I find something I love and use all the time I am totally buying two from now on...

This doesn't really pertain to clothes as much as it does shoesI am so in love with these flats! I can't believe I didn't think of them before when I was struggling to find office appropriate shoes in my shoe closet. The problem is that I have had them for close to three years now and they are literally falling apart. The same can be said for my silver gladiator sandals, nothing is ever quite the same color.  If I had known in May 2008 that I would be in this position now I would totally have ponied up another $20 or $25 for duplicates!

Also, I'm wearing stuff on my body not just my feet. The outfit I'm wearing today is very similar to this outfit.
  • Top: orange tank top, J Crew; beige short sleeved jacket, GAP
  • Bottom: white skirt, GAP
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver cut out flats, Merona for Target (similar here); turquoise and silver earrings, Pennyweights; turquoise and silver bead necklace. gift from Mom; brown tote bag, Bulga

June 6, 2011: Business Alternatives

After last week's craziness, I am going with a more traditional office look today. I have a feeling that I couldn't have gotten away with it forever... This is also because all of the college graduates that I recruited on Career Day are starting and I want to set a good example! The safest bet would have been a full suit but, I wanted to show them that there are other equally professional alternatives. Do you mix and match your suits as separates? What do you wear when you want to be professional that isn't a suit?
  • Toppurple 3/4 sleeve top, Xhiliration for Target (same shirt different color here); brown tweed jacket with floral details, George via The Unique Thrift Store
  • Bottombeige pinstripe pencil skirt, New York & Company
  • Shoes & Accessories: brown snake skin kitten heel shoes, Coach; coin pearl necklace, V'ta Jewelry; coin pearl earrings, borrowed from Mom then altered; cream woven tote, Loeffler Randall for Target

re-fashioNYC

You guys know how big I am about thrifting partly because of the great deals but, also because of the benefits for the environment! The City of New York is thinking the same thing and has started the re-fashioNYC program in response.

Annually NYC residents throw away approximately 200,000 tons of clothes, towels, blankets, curtains, shoes, handbags, belts, and other textiles and apparel. Frankly I think that can be attributed to laziness on their part but, the city of New York is going to make it ridiculously convenient for people who don't donate due to the lack of convenience.

re-fashioNYC is a partnership between the City of New York and Housing Works  to make clothing donation through convenient in-building drop-off service at no cost to the building or taxpayers. The program is expected to grow slowly in response to participation requests and Housing Works ability to expand its services.

If you're interested in participating in this new and convienient clothing reuse program, fill out the form here!

June 3, 2011: These Foolish Games

I am taking all sorts of fashion risks today! First of all just look at those sandals, I am asking for trouble.. or maybe not since no one really said anything to me yesterday about what I was wearing. I am totally bringing a pair of pack up shoes today.

Other than that my outfit seems normal right? Perhaps even totally stylin' and Tory Burch inspired? I'll feel your resounding "Yes!" and you would be mistaken. It is totally stylin' and definitely Tory Burch inspired but, not completely normal. Don't tell anyone but, this fab dress is a sleepshirt from Target. I know my secret is safe with you but, now you can see how I'm really pushing the envelope... What is the most shocking thing you've ever worn out in public?

  • Top: navy and white patterned "dress", Gilligan & O'Malley via Target
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver gladiator sandals, Isaac Mizrahi for Target; silver knotted necklace, Christmas gift from my dear friend; silver bead earrings, Tiffany & Co.cream woven tote, Loeffler Randall for Target

FBFF: Summer Lovin'

1. When it comes to packing for vacation what’s your mantra?

I am (admittedly) one of the worst packers ever! I have a serious tendency to over pack because I so nervous about needing wanting something from my expansive closet that I try to bring it all with me. I should follow my own advice: "Don't stress, there is probably a Target nearby!"

2. What are your must packs?

Do undies count? Seriously... The things I am most concerned with having besides that are my unique toiletries like my face stuff and my hair stuff. That isn't something I'm going to want to have to pick up on the fly or be able to buy at Target.

3. What are you happy to leave behind?

There isn't really anything that I am happy to leave behind but, I am more than happy to ignore my cell phone and leave it at the hotel or friend's/family's house where I am staying.

4. Any packing secrets that help you get everything into one suitcase?

If there is anything that comes close to helping me with this is making a list prior to packing at least so I get a visual idea of how many days I'll be gone and how much stuff I need to bring with me. Whether I follow the list or not is another story...

5. Beach reading… what are you taking with you to read in the sand?

I normally bring a bunch of glossies that I wouldn't normally spend money on and get in tune with what's coming up on the fashion horizon. If I'm reading a book that is too good to put down (most recently: The Hunger Games Trilogy) I will subject it to the sand as well.

June 2, 2011: Because I Have To

I don't really like this outfit, this is one of those mornings where I woke up and put on clothes... The weather has been getting increasingly warmer and more beautiful (YAY) which has found me headed towards the skirts and dresses in my closet. Except for today, I felt like pants.

There was a hidden benefit to wearing nothing but skirts this week so far as I discovered while putting this ensemble NONE of my pants fit me anymore. Well that's an exaggeration... MOST of my pants don't fit me right now and that is so frustrating. Desk jobs are bad for your health. For me it's not that I weight that much more since starting this new job it's just that everything is being redistributed to my hips that don't lie and my derrière... I will not buy fat pants! I am going to work on this problem. If you work a desk job how do you keep yourself active?

I also decided to be really bold and wear sandals today. Part of my pants not fitting can be attributed to the fact that I barely leave my desk so... I figured I can hide my feet and feel out people's receptiveness when I get up to grab my lunch from the fridge or another cup of hot water for tea. I actually am not sure it's going to work out. Either way I still do need to go shoe shopping, I'm thinking at least two or three pairs if I can find things I like.

  • Top: green ribbed tank top, Old Navy with a tank top underneath for the modesty; beige short sleeved jacket, GAP
  • Bottom: brown knit pants, New York & Company
  • Shoes & Accessoriesbronze sandals with genuine stone embellishments,bo'em via DSW; mother of pearl teardrop earrings, V'ta jewelry; purple tote bag, Coach
