August 22, 2011: Monday For Real

Last week my Monday was Wednesday and having that shorter week was a fantastic way to keep the vacation vibe going. Unfortunately that couldn't last forever and I am headed back to the office today for a full work week with some social engagements sprinkled in there for good measure!

Tonight I am going to be meeting up with my old college roomie before she heads back to London. I didn't really get to spend a ton of time with here while she was here but, the time we did spend together was absolutely lovely, I'm looking forward to tonight being more of the same. In terms of style I'm glad I have pieces in my closet this dress which can double as a professional work piece by day and a fun happy hour piece by night!

After the staycation fail and awkward conversation BF said he would put some of the money that we would have spent doing super fun things during our time off but, didn't (thanks weather) twoards beefing up my professional wardrobe. With that in mind I hit Loehmanns and found this awesome Calvin Klein suit. After all the coupons and discounts it was more than $200 off the original retail price, WIN! The one thing I didn't realize about it until this morning was that it has shoulder pads, FAIL. I have pretty broad shoulders as it is so shoulder pads are not a necessary thing; although I'm sure I would have been going crazy with the trend in the 80's had I been old enough. So this jack might need a trip to the tailor AKA my Mom to have them removed. What do you think of the fit?

On another note, since I am a now a Stella & Dot stylist I will be putting adding pieces that I think would be a great match with my daily outfit in each post. There is totally something for everyone and every outfit and this helps me pretend (in my mind) like I actually got to wear this amazing jewelry because I shouldn't can't buy everything for myself... that kind of completely defeats the purpose!

June 28, 2011: The Easy Way Out

As the weather heats up in New York I find myself heading to the other side of my closet: Dress (and Skirt) Land. It is just so much more convenient to throw a dress over my head or slide a skirt on and head out the door. Plus, it can still be super professional if need be... How do you keep yourself cool in the warm weather while still staying professional?
  • Top: purple and orange floral patterned jersey knit dress, New York & Company (same dress different color here) with a tank top underneath for the modesty; black cropped jacket, Express

May 3, 2011: Cool Waves

I was all ready for Tuesday to be gray and dismal as predicted but, it really wasn't that bad at all. Thanks for misleading me Weather.com... I'm glad I threw caution to the wind when getting dressed though because if I had paid any attention I would have swaddled myself in clothing and thrown on a pair of boots. Instead I wore a pretty gifted dress (the best kind) and the day was all the better for it!

This is one of those times where something new entered my wardrobe and I might not have necessarily made a huge effort to mention it but, I will moving forward so you don't think I'm shopping on the sly. While my mom was at the thrift store she saw this dress and picked it up for me. She said it was "so Iris!" I guess I could agree with that, I do love a jersey knit dress...  What kinds of pieces are "so you"?

  • Top: blue wave patterned jersey knit dress, Scarlett via The Unique Thrift Store/Mom; gray ruffle trim cardigan, LOFT/birthday gift from BF's mom
  • Shoes & Accessoriesgray suede-ish kitten heel shoes, Mossimo for Target; silver bead earrings, Tiffany & Co.; purple tote bag, Coach (not pictured)

February 7, 2011: Ladies Make Some Noise If You Wanna Be My Replacement

Today I have alot on my work plate, I am going to be interviewing candidates to fill my role where I work when I leave this Friday. I can't believe it's all happening so quickly, I feel like I just gave my notice yesterday instead of a week ago. That being said I am hoping to find someone to replace me before I go even though my boss says I'm irreplaceable, awww...

I am keeping it more professional today (AKA wearing a jacket) because I want to make a serious impression on the people who I meet. As my last week working in a business casual environment continues I might push that to it's limit as the week goes on! No, I don't think the teal tights count...
  • Top: coral embellished tank top, LOFT via Mom; khaki safari jacket, LOFT
  • Bottom: brown jersey knit skirt, Old Navy
  • Shoes & Accessories: brown pumps, Candies via Kohl's;  teal tights, Comfort Choice/Christmas gift from Cousin V (on sale here); tiger's eye earrings, Citygirl Accessories; brown Loeffler Randall bag, Target (same bag different color here

January 10, 2011: Yo, Yo Check Her Out!

That is what someone yelled to his buddy as I walked to my car this morning. I'm going to pretend it was in admiration of my bold fashion statement not anything mean or lecherous. New York City is well known for off color catcalls. I used to get them all the time when I was in high school but, they have lessened in frequency throughout the years. I suppose I'm not that young catholic school girl anymore (and I can't complain) but, I wonder if it is because I am older or more modest? Must be the modesty...

Anyway... Rainbow Tights Week! Lydia from Chic on the Cheap and I are focusing solely on the primary colors. I'm excited! Though, I'm a little on the fence about Friday because normally I can wear jeans to work and that doesn't really allow for tons of tight visibility. We are also going to be joined by Paul (a dancer) who started a blog just for this event! I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.
  • Top: black, brown, and red paisley dress, New York and Company with a tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Shoes & Accessories: black and nude vintage inspired peep toe mary janes, Madden Girl via Loehmanns; red tights, We Love Colors; onyx earrings, V'ta; black belt, included with these pants; blue Foley + Corrina City Clutch, gifted via Plaza Too

October 26, 2010: A Day Late, A Dollar Short

Sorry for the delay. I am still having trouble acclimating to the CA/NY time difference. I'm sure I'll get back into my groove soon enough but, for the rest of this week I am going to be featuring the day before's outfit... what can I say? Life happens but, it should even out.

Yesterday I was focusing on comfort over everything. As I'm getting used to taking these outdoor pictures I followed a bit of advice from JoAnn of Sidewalk Chalk about posing in pictures, one foot in front of the other (life lessons people, life lessons) I need some balance before I attempt that again, I almost went down.
  • Top: blue ruffled blouse, Atelier via Loehmanns; tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Bottom: brown knit pants, New York and Company
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver hardware embellished flats, Preview via Nordstrom Rack; labradorite necklace, V'ta Jewelry; labradorite earrings, Pennyweights; yellow alley bag

July 12, 2010: Dressing For Dinner

Today is the start of New York City Restaurant Week and I am excited to get my eat on! For those of you who don't know, NYC Restaurant Week debuted in 1992 when it was developed as a one-time culinary event to welcome the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to the City. Though created to appeal to delegates and other DNC attendees, the program also found a strong following among residents excited to dine at some of the City’s top restaurants for a fraction of the usual cost—$19.92 for three courses—and who wanted NYC Restaurant Week to be a recurring event. Now it's slightly more expensive ($24/lunch and $35/dinner) but, totally worth it!

I have a few reservations over the next two weeks and tonight is Asia de Cuba. I've actually eaten there before (delish!) but, it's been a while and since BF has never been there we are going so I can introduce him to the culinary wonder that is Asian Latin fusion. Because our dinner reservation is on the earlier side of things I have to be able to seamlessly transition from work to acceptable dinner attire. The easiest solution: a comfy yet chic dress, the right accessories, and a touch of make up before I leave! How would you dress for dinner?
  • Top: navy blue jersey knit dress, New York and Company with a tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Shoes & Accessories: yellow vintage inspired cut-out wedges, Merona for Target; semi-precious multi-stone necklace and earrings, custom V'ta jewlery; gray Balenciaga Le-Dix/motorcycle bag

June 17, 2010: Where Is The Weekend?

I'm a little confused and definitely aggravated... I don't understand why any company would give you any extra time off if you are going to have to work twice as hard when you return. Whatever relaxation you had achieved is completely negated by the onslaught of work you have to handle when you get back. For example: I am going in early today and would probably be staying late if I did not have another charity event to attend tonight that is, after a doctor's appointment. Seriously, what is the point and where is the weekend!?!

Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. On another note, I think I've done a good job of finding something I can wear to work, errands, and to the event without changing. Hooray for jersey knit dresses! The only thing I am adding is makeup later because I generally don't wear it during the day and for some (strange) reason can't go out at night without it. If these shoes weren't like walking on clouds I would probably swap them out for flats during the day but, that is definitely the case...

  • Top: black and white faux wrap dress, Merona for Target with a tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Shoes & Accessories: black peep-toe wedges, Dr. Scholl's. Yes, you read right these aren't your mom's original; blue swarovski crystal earrings, V'ta; black Fendi Spy Bag

April 30, 2010

I needed to take a sick day yesterday, total bummer. First of all because I was sick but, also because it was gorgeous outside and instead of being cooped up in my cubicle I was cooped up at home. But, a girl's gotta eat so I threw on a jersey knit dress and some sandals and ran to the grocery store. While I was getting my cart some random stranger actually came up to me, complimented me on my ensemble, and asked me where I got it. Sick busy me was totally caught off guard but, extremely flattered... Since she thought it was so nice I figured I would share it with you, I made BF take the pictures outside because it was so nice although I'll have to look for more places in my 'hood that might be nicer for outdoor shots than standing on a hill...

April 14, 2010

This afternoon I have a job fair to go to at Manhattan College. It is notorious (in my mind) for the ridiculous amount of stairs that you have to walk up to to get to the event space from the parking lot. I think they should provide a shuttle, I have a large box of promotional materials to carry after all! But, I digress... comfy shoes are a must today and so is dressing to impress to an extent. You want to fool, ahem, I mean convince the students that they want to work at your company (especially as unpaid HR interns with me) so looking professional and chic doesn't hurt! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also have to give a portion of New Employee Orientation at my job in the morning. I address some company policies and benefit so, I need to be taken seriously and appear authoritative-ish. Also, when I get to the part about dress code I like to point at what I'm wearing and say, "like this". Sorry about the crappy picture quality, my camera battery died and I had to take the first one with my phone...
  • Top: navy Catherine Malandrino jersey knit dress via Loehmanns (so comfy) and a brown and black zebra print cardi from New York and Company
  • Bottom: Would Spanx count here? Sure, why not!
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver hardware embellished flats from Nordtrom Rack, my abuela's vintage silver hoop earrings (not pictured), and my yellow alley purse. I also added a black belt after I took the pictures because it kinda tied the whole look together. It was from Kohls with these pants.
