May 30, 2012: A Blazer Alternative

In this tangible humidity it is really hard to wake up in the morning and motivate twoards a blazer. It's just too darn hot! Enter the equally almost as professional cardigan. Without the stuffy polyester lining a cardigan makes the heat and humidity a little more bearable don't you agree? I thought so...

  • Top: ivory tank top, LOFT (same shirt different color here); black cardigan, Merona for Target
  • Bottombeige pinstripe trousers, LOFT/gift from BF
  • Shoes & Accessories: black pumps, Nine West;  my abuela's vintage silver hoops; Neverfull GM, Louis Vuitton/gift from BF

September 7, 2011: Stranded Blogger

So, I totally stole that title from Katy over at Modly Chic. It is the hashtag for her event tonight and I am so excited to go and meet up with other stylish bloggers! Actually, I am honestly more excited about this that any other FNO related events. I will try to snap some pictures to share with you so you can live vicariously through me...

That being said I needed to make sure that my outfit for tonight was work appropriate and let me just say I flipping love this dress! I found it while I was shopping with my Mom at the thrift store a while ago and she tailored it for me. Now I think it fits the bill on all levels. It is vintage for real and even has pockets!! The only thing I wish I could do differently with this outfit is add a snazzier belt. My mom said red but, she is a poster girl lady for matchy matchy. I was thinking snake print but, I'll make do with what I have for now... What color belt would you pair with this dress?

Another challenge that I faced was the precipitation. Remember yesterday when my hair was straight? Yeah not so much anymore as you can see. I spent all my time while commuting yesterday dodging the proverbial bullet AKA rain drops only to be defeated by the extreme humidity and a tiny hole in the top of my umbrella (Really Totes? You are supposed to be for life!) Are you experiencing a drought? I'll come and get my hair done where you are I guarantee you it will rain (sans Keratin) but, I digress... I just gave in and am going al natural which doesn't always feel as "stylish" to me. Do you prefer straight hair or curly hair? What seems more stylish to you?

August 29, 2011: And The Hits Just Keep On Comin'

I hope everyone is doing ok after Hurricane Irene. On one level I'm really glad that the officials took it seriously and made drastic moves to keep people safe (ex: shutting down trains, evacuating people in low lying areas); on another level I'm annoyed because it really wasn't that bad where I am and my weekend was seriously impacted for some bad rain and wind: I didn't leave my house for almost two days because the storm was coming and BF had to stay at work from 12AM on Saturday to 8AM on Sunday.

Overall I'm just glad that everyone I know is safe and sound but, this morning Irene just keeps messing with me. The train I normally take to work isn't running which definitely alters my morning commute. I think she owes me the $16.00 I'm going to have to spend on parking... it's totally her fault!

Today starts a week of my boss being out on vacation so I am definitely making a concerted effort to be even more professional than before because I will be holding down the fort and I want to make a good impression. What does that mean? I'm not entirely sure. Maybe blazers all week...

August 10, 2011: The Joker Strikes Back

I just can't get away from this color combination; purple and green always sucks me in. Maybe they were meant to be together from the start... Also, lime green is a favorite of my old college roomie and I had her over for dinner so it seemed kind of meant to be! Do you have any "strange" color combinations that you are always drawn too?

  • Top: purple ribbed tank top, Old Navy with a tank top underneath for the modesty; lime green spotted cardigan, Merona for Target/gift from BF
  • Bottom: gray pencil skirt, New York & Company

June 13, 2011: Held On

I love this dress! I have had it for a long time and this is the first time that I have ever worn it out in public. Why? Well because it has a fairly open back and this deep drapey v-neck in the front. I'm glad I ignored the (logical) part of my brain that had told me to donate it so many times before and held on to it.

Since I was wearing it to work the easiest thing was to throw something over it. I think it might have been a bit more structured with a blazer or cardi, maybe next time... I also figured out (through much trial and error) that I can get away with a strapless bra and tank top for the modesty by day or night when I have plans with friends! I know, I know 2 + 2 = 4... revelations.

Do you have an item that you are holding on to because you're not sure how to wear it but, can't bear to get rid of it? Did you have such an item? How did you end up making it work?

  • Top: blue gray draped jersey knit dress, BCBG MaxAzria with a tank top underneath for the modesty; gray flyaway cardigan, New York & Company

July 26, 2010: Mondays Are "The Best"...

Today I am rocking the first pair of forgotten sandals from my personal mini shoe challenge inspired by Lyddiegal from Chic on the Cheap. I thought there would be alot more contrast between my striped top and the floral pattern of the wedges but, you really can't tell. They are also not overwhelmingly comfortable. I think it might be time to let these go... eBay here they come! Hopefully all my forgotten shoe experiences won't be this disappointing. At one point I must have thought all of these sandals were the coolest or I would not have purchased them. On a completely unrelated note, wish me luck because I have my annual performance evaluation this afternoon!
  • Top: navy and white striped hoodie (yes, there is a hood but, it hides well), GAP outlet
  • Bottom: khaki a-line skirt, Merona for Target
  • Shoes & Accessories: floral wedges, Delman via Neiman Marcus; my abuela's vintage silver hoop earrings; purple bag, Coach

June 22, 2010: Planning My Escape

It's official! I just got some requested vacation days approved so BF and I are going away for a long weekend this Friday!! We booked our hotel last night and I am counting down the days/hours/minutes until we jump in the car and head down to the shore. It won't be anything super fancy or lengthy but, it's nice to get out of the city and spend time together relaxing and celebrating our million and a half (six and a half) year anniversary!
  • Top: brown v-neck t-shirt with a (teal) tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Bottom: beige tweed Ann Taylor Loft skirt via Mom who thrifted
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver gladiator sandals, Isaac Mizrahi for Target (similar here); my abuela's vintage silver hoop earrings; yellow alley bag

April 14, 2010

This afternoon I have a job fair to go to at Manhattan College. It is notorious (in my mind) for the ridiculous amount of stairs that you have to walk up to to get to the event space from the parking lot. I think they should provide a shuttle, I have a large box of promotional materials to carry after all! But, I digress... comfy shoes are a must today and so is dressing to impress to an extent. You want to fool, ahem, I mean convince the students that they want to work at your company (especially as unpaid HR interns with me) so looking professional and chic doesn't hurt! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also have to give a portion of New Employee Orientation at my job in the morning. I address some company policies and benefit so, I need to be taken seriously and appear authoritative-ish. Also, when I get to the part about dress code I like to point at what I'm wearing and say, "like this". Sorry about the crappy picture quality, my camera battery died and I had to take the first one with my phone...
  • Top: navy Catherine Malandrino jersey knit dress via Loehmanns (so comfy) and a brown and black zebra print cardi from New York and Company
  • Bottom: Would Spanx count here? Sure, why not!
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver hardware embellished flats from Nordtrom Rack, my abuela's vintage silver hoop earrings (not pictured), and my yellow alley purse. I also added a black belt after I took the pictures because it kinda tied the whole look together. It was from Kohls with these pants.
