Be(e) Happy

We are in a whole new world! That's right, my back yard. Anyway, Wednesdays are a late night for me. As I mentioned previously I am taking a certification/professional development test prep class after work for the next few weeks and I don't get home until practically bedtime. Then, I wake up at the crack of dawn (as I did this AM) to go to spin class so,  when it comes to my outfit I am definitely looking for something low key and comfortable. Besides, it's almost Friday.

Today, I am wearing clothes (yay) but, my favorite thing about my outfit is these shoes! Although the pants are a close second. They were on consignment clearance and are a size that makes me feel really amazing about myself for arbitrary reasons. But, I digress... when the announcement was made that C Wonder was going out of business I was definitely one of the vultures shoppers who investigated the closing sales. I got a few things but, my crowning (shopping) achievement were these shoes. They are comfortable (win) and fun (bonus points.) Check out a detail shot of the shoes here. Did you get anything when C Wonder was closing?
  • Top: coral sweater, GAP
  • Bottom: brown plaid ankle pants, J Crew via Current Consignment
  • Shoes & Accessories: navy "bee happy" loafers, C Wonder; pearl earrings, Macys; vintage pearl necklace, my grandmother's jewelry box

Weekend Wear: My Cousin's Wedding

I've (kinda) been going on and on about my cousin's wedding so the least I could do is share pictures of me in the fabulous Adrianna Papell dress that I wore! I was so happy when I found it hiding on the sales rack at Macy's after a lengthy search; all it needed was a little tailoring (funky zipper popping out problems) and then it was perfect. I might have said this before but, if you are ever in a pinch for a special occasion dress you should Google Adrianna Papell and see what they have to offer. I'm sure there will be something for you.

I was equally happy about the fact that I was able to find jewelry and shoes to go with this dress and the occasion in my accessory arsenal so I didn't have to purchase anything else. While my natural old inclination would have been to scrounge up some pink, purple, or yellow jewelry to matchy match the dress my newer style inspired me to go with neutral silver... it goes with everything! What would you have paired this dress with?

  • Top: Sleeveless Pleated Surplice Floral Printed Faux Wrap, Adrianna Papell
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver Genero Sandal, SE Boutique via DSW;  labradorite necklace, V'ta Jewelry; labradorite earrings, Pennyweights; brown sunglasses, Mossimo for Target; White Monogram Multicolore Alma, Louis Vuitton (not pictured)

May 29, 2012: Holiday Hangover

Normally this term is synonymous with gorging oneself on too much food or imbibing a few too many cocktails but I find myself out of sorts for a different reason… too much relaxation? I know, that doesn’t really make a lot of sense. I spent Memorial Day weekend catching up on sleep and doing low key things around the house. Nevertheless, I still had SO much trouble peeling myself out of bed on Monday Tuesday morning to go to work; It was like I had just attempted a triathlon or something equally strenuous. What’s up with that?

That being said I am especially proud of myself for keeping it together wardrobe wise and rocking a professional ensemble complete with blazer! The feeling of sheer exhaustion wasn’t the only hurdle I had to overcome when putting my outfit together. The weather in NYC has been pretty gross. We’re talking high temps, 100% humidity (my hair loves this), overcast, misty rain nonsense... ick! I would really love a sunny summer! Is that too much to ask? Sorry, I digress... Picking out clothes to wear in my air conditioned office is hard when I feel like I won’t survive the commute there in what I’m wearing. Do you have any tips and tricks for summer office dressing that I could utilize?
  • Top: pink sweater with black trim, Alfani via Macy's via Mom; gray pinstripe blazer, Calvin Klein via Loehmanns (from this suit
  • Bottom: black skirt, Proenza Schouler for Target
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver silver Stella wedge pumps, Seychelles via DSW; coin pearl necklace, V'ta jewelry; coin pearl earrings, borrowed from Mom then altered by me; Neverfull GM, Louis Vuitton/gift from BF

October 19, 2010: Hit The Ground Running

It's good to be back! No, not from vacation... to the blog! I wish I was still in California (they have the internet there too, I could have made it work) but, I digress... Hopefully I'll get back into the swing of things AKA not take tomorrow's picture in the hallway but, transitioning back to normal life is harder that I remember! Today, I need to make it work because it is back to the office this morning and then to a committee meeting this evening.

Please forgive the pajama-like outfit, with all these things I have to take care of I appreciate/need the comfort while tihngs get back to normal! Plus, I'm not used to this chilly weather quite yet but, I am going be inspired by Nina and Lyddiegal's advice and layer! What are your tips for dressing in the falling temperatures?
  • Top: red ribbed tank top, GAP; gray flyaway cardigan, New York & Company
  • Bottom: brown and red pinstripe pants, New York & Company (these are one of the pairs of pants that I needed to lengthen and let the cuffs down, how do you think they came out?)
  • Shoes & Accessories: gray suede-ish kitten heel shoes, Mossimo for Target; turquoise and silver earrings, Pennyweights; turquoise and silver cross necklace; black Spy Bag, Fendi

July 20, 2010: Thrown Together

One might think an extra day added to their weekend would be relaxing but,  they would be mistaken if they thought that I had experienced that yesterday. When I woke up this morning I had so much trouble getting out of bed which is normally not the case, I am one of those crazy morning people. I pulled this outfit together because it was comfy and easy but, I'm not quite sure that everything really goes together. What do you think? All I know is since this will see me through work and the meeting I have afterward I am ok!
  • Top: orange dolman sleeve top, Xhiliration via Target
  • Bottom: khaki green skirt, Merona via Target
  • Shoes & Accessories: bronze sandals with genuine stone embellishments, bo'em via DSW, coin pearl necklace, V'ta; coin pearl earrings, borrowed from mom then altered; vintage Louis Vuitton Speedy, eBay

Weekend Wear: The Perfect Summer Outfit

This, in my opinion, is one of the simplest things to achieve with a few basic items you probably have in your closet already, like me! You'll need a tank top, linen (or other lightweight) pants, sparkly sandals and accessories plus a great bag! You can even throw in a fedora or a jacket if it gets chilly! The general look can take you through any event (even work) that you have to attend throughout the summer. For example: I am going out to brunch with one of my bestest friends but, have to head to New Jersey immediately after for a family BBQ and sleepover with fav cousin. That will probably include some evening activities AKA going to local venues for imbibing, etc.. I will weather it all with my perfect summer outfit!
  • Top: green ribbed tank top, Old Navy before they started making them super long (ick)
  • Bottom: white linen pants, Bitten via Steve & Barry's
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver beaded flip flops, Target; coin peal necklace, V'ta ; coin pearl earrings, borrowed from mom then altered (not pictured); brown leather bag with silver floral embellishments, GAP

May 20, 2010

It is not gross and rainy!!! How appropriate as Floral Week continues. I couldn't be happier for the actual weather but, I'm a little bummed because I am feeling a bit under the weather. You win some, you lose some I guess.
  • Top: light brown sweater, GAP outlet with a tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Bottom: pink embroidered skirt, Ann Taylor: second hand from mom who thrifted it
  • Shoes & Accesories: silver gladiator sandals, Isaac Mizrahi for Target (similar here); silver beaded necklace, Bitten via Steve & Barry's; Tiffany & Co's silver bead earrings; gray Balenciaga Le-Dix/motorcycle bag

May 18, 2010

Blogging is so viral but, in a good way... Yesterday I was reading alltumbledown (a regular thing as you can see from my blog roll) and noticed that she is taking part in {have a cute day}'s floral week. Since I was thinking of wearing a floral print today anyway why not get involved in that as a tribute to spring? Hopefully this will coax the sun out of hiding and make the rain rain go away!

While this is a standard business casual day I have a fancy charity event to go to after work (with mom) so I have to seamlessly transition from day to evening with what I am wearing because I don't have time to go home and change. I think it's all in the shoes AKA I will bring flip flops to stick under my desk during the day since I would have been in whatever shoes for more than the standard 8 hours and these black pumps are comfy but, not that comfy. Also, the mini makeup bag just in case there are blemishes, dark circles, etc.
  • Top: floral print t-shirt, Vera Wang for Kohl's a thank you gift from BF for successfully helping him create a business casual wardrobe
  • Bottom: black pinstripe Calvin Klein suit skirt, via SYMS
  • Shoes & Accessories: black pumps, Candies via Kohl's; silver beaded necklace, Bitten via Steve & Barry's; Tiffany & Co's silver bead earrings; black Fendi spy bag

May 10, 2010

Happy Monday! This week is officially Dress Your Best Week at academichic and I have decided to participate because so often, our focus when getting dressed in the morning is how to minimize or downplay aspects of our bodies that we’re just not crazy about. Does this skirt smooth my hips? Does this top hide my tummy? Do these pants make my thighs look slimmer? They wondered, as did I, what would happen if you inverted that thought process? What if, instead of dressing to mitigate your so-so, you dressed to highlight the parts of your body that you love most? What if, for a whole week, you committed to self-consciously dressing your best bits? See who else is dressing their best...

I am so excited to participate but, I have to confess coming up with five things that I like about myself was difficult. We live in a society where airbrushed and digitally altered people are the mainstream of beauty. For everyone I know (myself included), there are always parts of one's self that can be improved upon. The five part of myself that I picked (the last one was a suggestion by BF) were:
  1. my legs/calves
  2. my boobs
  3. my cheekbones (although I don’t know how one dresses to accentuate that)
  4. my hourglass shape
  5. my soft skin

Today, I am dressing for my legs which doesn't necessarily mean short skirts or cut off shorts! I think one of the way to make them look their best is a modest (but sexy) pencil skirt which comes to the knee and some killer heels. Your legs look miles long! The pencil skirt is easy but, picking shoes is a little more difficult to choose because I still need to be comfortable at work. Hopefully, I am achieving the best look for my legs, what do you think?

May 6, 2010

Sorry for no post yesterday but, I didn't go into work. Today, on the other hand, I most definitely am and my projects are looming overhead! I need a vacation, a legit vacation not, random sporadic days off to run errands but, I digress...

April 28, 2010

Do you like the new picture background? I moved to another spot in my hallway, super exciting!!! It's still a work in progress... One day I will take fantastic pictures but, practice makes perfect and today is not that day.

The sun is peeking it's head out and even though it's still cold I'm feeling excited about not being head to toe covered up. Time for capris! Sadly, I think part of the reason that my outfit doesn't look ah-mazing in this mediocre picture is because the items of clothes are a little big on me, especially the shirt. I thought I weeded all those items out of my closet... I guess not. This shirt might need to go in the donation bag when I get home.

I am trying to find similar and affordable versions of what I am wearing because not many items from my wardrobe are currently in stores now since the whole point of this is to not buy (a ton) of new clothes. Is that something that interests you? Leave me a comment and let me know.
  • Top: aqua wrap shirt, New York and Company with white tank top under (for the modesty)
  • Bottom: brown plaid capris, New York and Company (similar-ish here)
  • Shoes & Accesories: bronze ballet flats, Me Too via DSW (similar here); chunky multi stone necklace, picked up at a local jewelry store (similar here); yellow alley bag (similar *vegan option* here)

April 26, 2010

First of all, how do you like the new logo/banner? It was made by a very talented and creative design team... my mom and I. And, when I say "my mom and I" I mean I had an idea and she completely bought it to life *thanks mom* with a little technical contribution from me. I think it is pretty amazing and love the fact that it looks a little Jordi Labanda-ish, no? Either way, I hope you enjoy it!

This morning is so gloomy and cold (compartively to the past few days) and it's not helping me want to get ready and leave my warm cozy apartment at all. I think someone should tell Monday that they can't be like this and instead they should be sunny and beautiful so I am more motivated! Now we can come back to reality with today's outfit. Please excuse the random shots, I am still trying to get the timing down... is there something on my face?
  • Top: purple 3/4 length sleeve t-shirt, Target
  • Bottom: black and white tweed pants, Mandee. Yes, you read correctlyMandee. I have had these pants since high school. I don't know if that's something to be proud of or not but, they still fit and are still appropriate so... I keep them. Thank you business casual prep school!
  • Shoes & Accessories: black suede Rocket Dog sneaker shoes, today is just the day for things from high school... V'ta coin pearl necklace, Tiffany silver earrings, and the yellow alley bag

April 20, 2010

Yay 4 day work week! I'm a little exhausted thanks to the "errands" I had to run yesterday so thankfully today is a plain old work day; no presentations to give, no job fairs to go to, and no meetings as far as I can recall. Now that I've said that, I hope my Outlook isn't freaking out with reminders when I get into the office today...

This was my first attempt at a non-timer picture (AKA, my BF took it) and I'm not sure I'm loving it... The lighting is terrible (my fault) but the picture is oddly proportioned (his fault?). I don't know how to fix that but, I'm working on it. I have a feeling there are going to be lots of mediocre pictures before there are any ah-mazing ones.

  • Top:black, white, and gray patterned blouse, New York & Company
  • Bottom: khaki green skirt, Target, I LOVE a skirt with pockets...
  • Shoes & Accessories: purple suede-ish ballet flats, Target. Silver beaded necklace from the now defunct Steve & Barry's (that place was so great) Bitten collection. I still have a few choice pieces from the line and feel like it could have been a huge success minus Steve & Barry's terrible business model but, I digress... also crystal bead earrings, V'ta and the alley bag. I will bust out a different one tomorrow I promise.

April 1, 2010

I love shopping as much as the next girl but, times are tough and even though the man says things are getting better I'm just not seeing it yet. Thankfully, I am employed but, working in an office (HR at that) there is definitely a business-casual standard that I need to meet when I dress for work in the morning. At the same time, I don't want to show up everyday in the same outfit. So, what's a girl to do about it? In-debt herself further to have all the latest things, take on extra jobs to make up the gap, borrow, steal, or make do with what she has? I will take the latter!

I have a pretty large closet... and another one for shoes. Sufficed to say I have ALOT of clothes. The vast majority of them are work appropriate so, I was thinking that I should be able to come up with enough combinations of clothes to last me for at least a year or more utilizing what I have. A different outfit for work everyday, hence 260 since that's about how many work days there are in a year. It sounds very daunting but, I think I'm up for the challenge Occasionally I might get a gift certificate, go shopping with my mom (who always buys me something *love ya mom*) or buy something myself but, it would definitely be something I have a need for since I will be hyper aware of what I have in my closet. As a person who did a significant amount of research in college I feel the need to define my terms. What I mean by an outfit is a different combination of top and bottoms (ex: Day 1 Top A and Bottom A, Day 2: Top B and Bottom A). This does not include shoes, accessories, or handbags. But, I will show them to you for the fun of it!

My goal with this is not to show off how much clothes I have or even that I can put a stylish outfit together. It is simply to show myself and others that you can make great things with what you already have not just "make-do" You don't have to go to the store and buy a whole new outfit for an event (even though that is fun) you might be able to find a dress in your closet with the tags still on it (yes, that has happened to me). And for all those times that you throw up you hands and say, "I have nothing to wear!!" I want to show that you probably do have something you haven't seen all the potential in the things you already own. Another thing that I want to show myself, and I suppose everyone could learn from it, is the use-value of my clothes (ex: basic black ballet flats that cost $12.99 are much more valuable than a prom dress that costs $199.99) I can agree that there are basic pieces that should be of higher quality because you will wear them more but, the trendy stuff that you could pay a fortune store in designer boutiques is better purchased somewhere like Target because it will be out of style next season.

Now, lets get down to business.
  • Top: yellow ruffle front blouse from Ann Taylor Loft
  • Bottom: gray pencil skirt from New York & Company (high use-value item I bet)
  • Shoes & Accessories: brown/black snake embossed ballet flats from Target and an amazing carved bone and turquoise necklace. I will also be throwing all my crap in a patent leather purple Coach purse (not pictured).

I will try to take better pictures moving forward but, day one is very rushed. Check back tomorrow as this experiment continues!!!
