July 30, 2010: Less Casual Friday

As you know I experience the joy that is "casual friday!" Being allowed to wear jeans in the workplace is just another way of recognizing that the weekend is just around the corner, or at least that's what I like to think! But, on this particular Friday I have been slammed with lots of tasks to complete and a morning meeting so the weekend doesn't necessarily seem as close as I would hope.

I know the people that I am meeting with from previous dealings so, the ambiance of the meeting doesn't have to be hyper formal but, I feel like showing up in denim capris and a fun graphic tee is also inappropriate. What's a girl to do? Fancy jeans I think! Normally I don't wear these to work because in my mind it defeats the point of a truly casual friday since they are so long I need to wear heels but, in this case they are perfect for the meeting and they give me another reason to use a pair of forgotten shoes again!
  • Top: red floral print top, Old Navy
  • Bottom: dark wash trouser jeans, Not Your Daughter's Jeans via Nordstrom Rack

July 29, 2010: The Sincerest Form

I went to a wedding a few months ago and it was one of the best weddings I have been to in my adult life! Everything was so laid back and relaxed; all the guests were just having a good time and celebrating. Most importantly there was no bridezilla! She was having a ball in her cocktail length wedding dress (with pockets!!) hot pink shoes and button bouquet! These forgotten shoes and simple dress are an homage to her relaxed style even on one of the most important days of her life! Hopefully I can be as laidback while I wait for Friday...
  • Top: black convertible dress, Monif C. Although Monif C is a fabulous plus size brand this particular dress will fit anyone size 8-24 and is a great addition to your wardrobe! There are about 22 different ways to tie/pin/gather the dress and I am keeping it modest for the office. I could shift a few things around for happy hour after or date night with the right accessories.
  • Shoes & Accessories: hot pink espadrilles, Chrisitan Louboutin; pink swawrovski crystal earrings, Pennyweights; silver L.A.M.B bag via Loehmann's

A Grown Up Birthday!

My birthday is coming very soon!!! This year is a little different than those that have passed. I really don't want to make any plans for celebrating; whatever happens happens and hopefully I'll have fun partaking in that. Obviously I will spend time with my family and BF and of course I will go out with friends but, I just don't feel like stressing myself out planning a party (normal) where nothing ever goes like it should (also normal.). In terms of gifts... my list is lame. I normally create some sort of list for things I want for my birthday gift so people know what to buy me since according them, I am a very difficult person to shop for (debatable.) This year all I can think about is practical things I need:
  1. Having some items of clothing tailored because I generally can't afford it
  2. Having some shoes cobbled because I generally can't afford it
  3. Spending the day thrifting and maybe some normal shopping
  4. Contacts (which mom is getting me, thanks mom)
  5. Some sort of vacation (which thankfully BF is handling for me)
  6. A completely "normal" birthday wish list item... I LOVE this ring! I also have a credit to Tiffany & Co. that someone could relieve me of and use to buy this fabulous piece of jewelry!
It's not that these aren't really great, fun things it's just normally I am way more specific and focused in what I want ex: I want this bag or these shoes or this ring (seriously). My mom said that it means I'm getting more mature; right now I'm not really sure what I think it means but, it's different for sure... Either way it's coming and there's nothing I can do to stop it. Time to celebrate!!

July 28, 2010: I Though I Was...

I'm was going to give the forgotten shoes a break today. But, I know they are itching to be worn and I was struck inspiration for this outfit while I was getting ready to run out the door. I really was not intending for all of these shoes to be worn in the order that they are pictured but, it seems to be working out that way...

I'm not sure that I LOVE this final choice but, I only have so much time in the morning to come up with an outfit. One would say, "You should lay out your clothes the night before"  and in this case I had but, when I put it on this morning it just wasn't working for me, such is life.
  • Top: yellow ruffle collar shirt, LOFT
  • Bottom: gray cropped pants, Bitten via Steve & Barry's
  • Shoes & Accessories: turquoise wedges, born; turquoise and silver earrings, Pennyweights; multi-stone bracelet, V'ta (not pictured); purple bag, Coach

The Naughty Step

I was tagged by the lovely Lorena and I have to put someone/thing on The Naughty Step. I'm not exactly sure what that is or where it originated but, I'll give it a whirl. I'm putting BP on the Naughty Step! Obviously everyone knows about the oil spill but, what people might not have heard about is that two weeks prior to the Deepwater Horizon explosion some of BP's malfunctioning equipment led to the release of over 530,000 lbs of chemicals into the air of Texas City and surrounding areas. I don't put BP on the Naughty Step because these unfortunate incidents happened (although after hearing that some alarms on the Deepwater Horizon had been turned off because they were registering false positive was not very motivating) I put them there because there was no rush to fix the problem, it felt like because they weren't losing "tons" of money and some of the proposed fixes were too expensive they just let things continue the way they were until they found something that suited them and their wallets while the eco-system of the Gulf was and still is being irrevocably damaged and the livelihood of people residing in the surrounding states has been detrimentally affected.

Enough of my crazy ranting... now, I'm supposed to tag someone else so, I think it will have to be Frances Joy of Mad Dress Game.

July 27, 2010: Piece of Cake

I didn't intend on wearing my forgotten shoes in the order that they are listed but, it's kind of working out that way. So far, it has been fairly easy to incorporate them into my wardrobe (knock on wood.) Maybe I was just being complacent before, relying to heavily on the easy combination i.e.: silver gladiator sandals that go with everything. Do you have any "go to" items that make you forsake all others? Either way I'm glad I have pushed myself to make these work with what I have!
  • Top: white, blue, and green argyle sweater, Merona for Target (similar and on sale here)
  • Bottom: gray pencil skirt, New York and Company
  • Shoes & Accessories: yellow suede wedges, born (their shoes are not my thing but, the sandals are fabulous); silver bead earrings, Tiffany & Co.; purple bag Coach

July 26, 2010: Mondays Are "The Best"...

Today I am rocking the first pair of forgotten sandals from my personal mini shoe challenge inspired by Lyddiegal from Chic on the Cheap. I thought there would be alot more contrast between my striped top and the floral pattern of the wedges but, you really can't tell. They are also not overwhelmingly comfortable. I think it might be time to let these go... eBay here they come! Hopefully all my forgotten shoe experiences won't be this disappointing. At one point I must have thought all of these sandals were the coolest or I would not have purchased them. On a completely unrelated note, wish me luck because I have my annual performance evaluation this afternoon!
  • Top: navy and white striped hoodie (yes, there is a hood but, it hides well), GAP outlet
  • Bottom: khaki a-line skirt, Merona for Target
  • Shoes & Accessories: floral wedges, Delman via Neiman Marcus; my abuela's vintage silver hoop earrings; purple bag, Coach

July 22, 2010: Is It Friday Yet?

I resisted every urge to wear a purple tank top with this dress (it was honestly a little jarring when I tried it on) but, that didn't stop me from adding the purple bag! Joker and Barney be darned, I love the purple and green color combo!

I tried some shots this morning where I didn't look sleepy/unamused/angry/whatever I normally look like... I think it turned out ok. I don't know what I was thinking at that exact moment but, we'll just pretend that I was imaging all the fun I am going to have this weekend doing I don't know what yet! One thing that is for certain: my mom is coming home from a two week trip and I am excited and happy to see her on Saturday when she returns!

Also, just in case you didn't notice, now there is a little toolbar at the bottom of each post so you can instantly share these super cool posts on Facebook, Twitter, etc. I know, I can't contain my excitment either!
  • Top: green, black, and white scroll print dress, Trulli for LOFT with a tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Shoes & Accessories: black peep-toe wedges, Dr. Scholl's; silver and garnet earrings made by an old co-worker; purple Coach bag

July 21, 2010: Double Duty

I have seen this color combination used in some of my other daily outfit blog reads and I love it! So, I thought there must be some similar yellow and navy in items my wardrobe somehwere that I can use to emulate this pairing... and I found it. I had actually worn this outfit a few weekends ago (with purple flip flops and a different purse) but, thought that it could be appropriate for work so I saved it for workwear instead of doing a Weekend Wear post with it. I'm glad I did because although I have my standard work duties to take care of today there is a huge picnic at one of our other locations that I will be going to in the afternoon. This outfit fits the bill for both as a more casual summer work look for a hot and humid day, as well as, cute "fun in the sun" picnic wear, no?
  • Top: navy blue ribbed tank top, Old Navy (before they started making everything ridiculously long)
  • Bottom: yellow and brown polka dot skirt, Merona for Target [remixed]
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver gladiator sandals, Isaac Mizrahi for Target (similar and on sale here); coin pearl necklace, V'ta; coin pearl earrings, borrowed from mom then altered; vintage Louis Vuitton speedy, eBay

July 20, 2010: Thrown Together

One might think an extra day added to their weekend would be relaxing but,  they would be mistaken if they thought that I had experienced that yesterday. When I woke up this morning I had so much trouble getting out of bed which is normally not the case, I am one of those crazy morning people. I pulled this outfit together because it was comfy and easy but, I'm not quite sure that everything really goes together. What do you think? All I know is since this will see me through work and the meeting I have afterward I am ok!
  • Top: orange dolman sleeve top, Xhiliration via Target
  • Bottom: khaki green skirt, Merona via Target
  • Shoes & Accessories: bronze sandals with genuine stone embellishments, bo'em via DSW, coin pearl necklace, V'ta; coin pearl earrings, borrowed from mom then altered; vintage Louis Vuitton Speedy, eBay

Weekend Wear: Lady In Red

Yesterday I wasn't at work (obviously) but, I was taking care of business! I had alot of errands to run and appointments to keep so a personal day it was. I threw on this maxi (which I have had since at least last summer, perhaps even prior to that and have never worn) and went from laundry to, lunch a the River Cafe (which was fabulous! Their Restaurant Week menu did not disappoint!!), to a doctor's appointment, to other errands, to getting caught in a torrential rain storm (hence why I look a little disheveled and soaked in this picture) and remained chic, cool, and comfy all day long. I wanted to punch up the red of the dress with some turquoise but, I didn't have anything other than the jewelry... How do you think it turned out?
  • Top: red and black maxi dress with a tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Shoes & Accessories: silver gladiator sandals, Isaac Mizrahi for Target (similar and on sale here); turquoise and silver earrings, turquoise and silver cross necklace, black Fendi Spy Bag (not pictured)

100th Post - A New Challenge!

As you know, I have been at this personal style challenge for a little over three months! It's been somewhat difficult and I'm sure it will only get harder as time passes but, in honor or my 100th post I have decided to throw in a little something extra. I challenge myself (and you if your interested) to use use all the products (hair stuff, lotion, powder, soap, perfume, makeup) in my possession to completion before buying anything new!

I have so many bottles of lotion, perfume, etc. and a stockpile of soap (because I prefer it in a bar and whenever I find one that smells nice I pick it up) some of which I have purchased for myself but, many which have come as gifts for whatever occasion. You know those gifts when the person doesn't know what to get you so they just buy you a gift basket from Bath and Body Works (I'll admit I'm guilty of it as well sometimes.) Not only do I get them from my friends and acquaintances but, I also get a decent amount of those gifts as runoff from my mom who is a teacher and doesn't really use those products. I'm sure you can imagine how much product I have to go through...

If you are interested in joining me grab the banner and add it to your blog (If you are having trouble email me and I will send it to you.) Also, leave me a comment so I can count you in. Let's fight the spirit of consumption and excessiveness that is the "American Way" (while saving ourselves from uneccesary spending) and use what we have until we don't have anymore before we hit the stores! The first step for me is going to be taking a good hard look at what I have and making a list... I will share with you when I'm done!

July 16, 2010: Teeing Off

There has been alot of talk about slogan tee's that started at academichic and has spilled over into the blogosphere. I figured I would add my two cents since I had been talking about t-shirts not too long ago. I terms of slogan tee's I only own one (I think) and it is the "Fashion is Not a Luxury" tee from Bitten/Steve & Barry's. Although, I agree with what the t-shirt says I wouldn't use it as my primary means of conveying that message. I would want to show people that fashion is not a luxury by dressing stylishly and not having it cost me a fortune which I think I have been successful at thus far. I actually find it ironic that something as casual and not fashion forward as a t-shirt was briefly a messenger on it's behalf. On the other hand, graphic tee's are starting to find there way back into my wardrobe but, only if they make me laugh like the one I am wearing today! These tee's are fine for casual fridays and other similar laid back occasions, like when BF and I see Despicable Me tonight. I am so excited! Whose a 5 year old at heart? O yeah, that'd be me...

  • Top: graphic tee, Threadless
  • Bottom: trouser jeans, GAP outlet
  • Shoes & Accessories: purple suede-ish ballet flats, Mossimo for Target; carnelian earrings, Elizabeth Showers Vintage; gray Balenciaga Le-Dix/motorcycle bag

July 15, 2010: Why So Serious?

Does the purple and green color combination remind you of the Joker? Because for me that is the only thing that comes to mind. When I use it in outfits I try not to make it so jarring hence, using it as an accent color. How do you think it came out?
  • Top: cream sweater with natural stone collar embellishment, Adrienne Vitandini via Mom; green tank top underneath for a pop of color, New York and Company
  • Bottom: brown pinstripe skirt, New York and Company
  • Shoes & Accessories: purple suede-ish ballet flats, Mossimo for Target. Does anyone remeber when Mossimo was a big brand sold at fancy retailers like Nordstrom? Maybe it's just me; pearl earrings, birthday gift from mom a few years ago; gray Balenciaga Le-Dix/motorcycle bag

July 14, 2010: Rain Drops Keep Falling On My Head

Yesterday's overcast state was just a preview of today's mess. The continuous and unrelenting rainfall adds an extra challenge to getting dressed this morning since I have work, a big presentation, and reservations for dinner with BF (who continued my culinary adventure and made me lasagna last night. Yum!) at The Russian Tea Room with no time to stop at home and change. Normally, that would mean a casual yet chic jersey knit dress but, in this weather I'd rather not. What is a girl to do? Enter classy black pants! These are the same kind of pants from New York and Company that shrink (and I am still going to fix) except for the black ones, wierd...
  • Top: pink dipdye sleeveless blouse, Trulli for LOFT
  • Bottom: black knit pants, New York and Company
  • Shoes & Accessories: black pumps, Steve Madden; coin pearl necklace, V'ta; coin pearl earrings, mom then modified; silver L.A.M.B bag via Loehmann's

July 13, 2010: Sky Might Fall

Asia de Cuba was delicioso, as expected! If you can get a reservations during NYC Restaurant Week I highly recommend it. The next stop on our culinary adventure is The Russian Tea Room tomorrow night. I've never been there before but, I hear great things and am excited to try it out.

It is crazy overcast outside today but, still hot and humid. There are supposed to be thunderstorms all day and I am just waiting for it to start. Hopefully I can get to work before that happens, since I'm running late that might not happen...
  • Top: purple ruffled sleeveless top, New York and Company with a tank top underneath for the modesty
