October 11, 2011: Geometry is Sexy

With all the talk of Re/Dress NYC closing it's doors I felt a strong urge to finally bust out this dress that I have been saving for the right occasion. I think I've made this "mistake" before; what is really the "right time" to wear awesome clothes other than everyday? That being said, I definitely had to wait until the weather got cooler before I swaddled myself in polyester because it doesn't breathe at all!

Also, I just want to point out that I did not come up with "Geometry is Sexy" myself (as much as I might have wished I did) it was on the tag for the dress that I picked up at the $20 Vintage Dress sale in June! Yes, I saved the tag... No, you shouldn't judge me. If you are a blogger, where do you come up with inspiration for your blog post titles?

Now on to the shoes... I know I expressed a fair share of condemnation towards Target in response to their frustrating Missoni launch but, while I was at Target looking for something completely unrelated I spotted an endcap with a bunch of these shoes and one pair in my size! Since I have a gift card to Targét burning a hole in my wallet I decided to pick them up. Then I may or may not have fallen prey to the Missoni for Target craze and gone to different Target's looking for more stuff...

February 2, 2011: The Show Must Go On

Even though there is an rain/ice storm happening outside I still have things to do today. Especially since, I officially gave my notice yesterday. (It went well, YAY) I have an epic to do list from my boss so I can get him caught up on all the stuff I am responsible for and naturally there is a job fair today. On top of that (and despite the fact that I missed my first two reservations, thanks snow) it is NYC Restaurant Week again! I have reservations tonight and Friday which I am hoping to keep!

So, what's a girl to do when there a million different things on her plate? Throw on a dress of course! I had spotted this one on the Newport News website a few years ago. I thought it was lovely but, way expensive plus, I'm not a fan of ordering without trying on so I let it go... While I was at the thrift store with my mom I spotted it on the rack just begging to be snatched up by us. One of the things that I hadn't noticed (or had forgotten) was that is had some crazy bell sleeves... so not my style! Mom took care of that with her mad sewing skills and now the dress is just right. I decided to pair it with orange tights for a bunch of reasons: it's cold, they're awesome, and I am going to be heading into a super corporate environment in a week and a half.  I don't think orange tights will work and I'm a little nervous about that. Yes, that is what I am most nervous about and some other stuff but, I digress... If you work in a corporate office how do you dress? Even if you don't do you have any tips for me?

Birthday Beginnings

I didn't go to work this morning because I had some things to deal with and appointments to keep but, when that was all said and done I got to begin the birthday celebration a little early with my mom. We went shopping at the Unique Thrift Store and got some pretty fantastic stuff! I'm hoping this is indicative of what tomorrow will be like... Here's a small glimpse of what I got and I have to say I think the blue suede shoes are my fav but, I've saved a close second for tomorrow's work ensemble. You'll just have to wait and see!

Question: Where Can I Find Eco-Friendly Interview Clothes?

As I have mentioned before I work in HR and in my time functioning as a Recruiter I have seen alot of hilarious resumes and cover letters, met some "interesting" people, and gotten a good amount of questions. One of the more difficult questions was posed to me by a college student at a job fair. I remember complimenting her on her suit (I feel as thought those people are more serious about their search. First impressions, people!) then we proceeded to discuss a greening initiative that she had worked on at former internship listed on her resume... standard job fair stuff. The two topics melded together and we talked about the accessibility of eco-friendly products and clothing made out of organic/sustainable materials which led her to the questions, "Where can a college student on a budget get an eco-friendly interview outfit?"

To be honest, I was a little stumped... OK fine, really stumped! There are lots of places to buy eco-friendly products made out of organic materials or repurposed items but, where are all the suits? Either way, I was hard pressed to find anything particularly affordable in the standards of a college budget. My best solution: thrifting!! What could be more green that using the resources we have and not consuming or expending more? I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. That should be the answer to all of life's issues.

You can get a beautiful suit that someone was tired of or doesn't fit into anymore for a small fraction of the price. More importantly, I don't think I've ever seen a suit in a thrift store that cost more than $25! If you don't have one of the big name thrift stores by you you can shop Goodwill online or smaller consignment shops. Anyway you go about it there is a gigantic potential there to find what you are searching for at an affordable price if you take the time to look. Plus, it keeps those discarded clothes out of landfills. Where else would you look?
