What To Wear To A Job Fair: The Cool Weather Edition

So what we previously discussed potential job fair outfits but, the weather is much cooler (if you didn't notice) and it definitely limits changes your clothing options. We already know how to dress for an interview now I think it doesn't hurt to revisit the job fair situation especially given the experiences I had at my last two job fairs for a while. Those people must not have read my old post...

I'll just give you them a reminder that you shouldn't wear jeans or pajamas! A job fair isn't a casual affair for most employers and you want to be thought of as a potential employee therefore you should dress the part. You can wear a suit but, if you don't have one or want to save that look for a potential interview you can try out some of the styles I've illustrated below.
Cool Weather Job Fair 4

Cool Weather Job Fair 3

Cold Weather Job Fair 1

Cool Weather Job Fair 2

These are just a few ideas of what you could wear. You know you don't have to dress in completely formal business attire to attend a job fair (although, it doesn't hurt) but, you do want to convey a sense of professionalism in what you are wearing. The person you meet at the fair is your ticket in and you want to make a great impression!

February 10, 2011: Colorblind

I could have sworn that I have seen this somewhat crazy color combination somewhere before but, I am having trouble tracking it down. Maybe I dreamt it and it was lying in wait amongst my sartorial subconscious. Despite that foundation I still had alot of trouble picking out what to wear today. I think the uncertainty of what lies ahead is messing with my outfit compilation skills. Maybe I'm just over stressing about all the little things that don't really matter... obvi that's the case, maroon tights are awesome and navy/mustard yellow is one of my fav color combos! What's yours? I'll try that next, I'm sure it will make me feel better...
  • Top: navy boatneck sweater, LOFT
  • Bottomyellow and brown polka dot skirt, Merona for Target
  • Shoes & Accessoriesbrown snake skin kitten heel shoes, Coach; maroon tights, Comfort Choice/Christmas gift from Cousin V (on sale here); coin pearl necklace, V'ta jewelry; coin pearl earrings, borrowed from mom then altered; brown leather tote bag, Bulga

February 9, 2011: Breaking All The Rules

So I am down to my last few days in this office and I am feeling a little wild and crazy... You remember last week when I recklessly paired brown tights and black boots? Well, I'm doing it again today! I know it's Wednesday but, I am going to wear denim to work. I can see the horrified looks on your faces now... I know it's cray cray but, I don't care. I have a feeling that things are going to take a turn for the conservative around here and I wanted to push my sartorial limits as much as I can in place where I am comfortable leaving. Sadly, my "reckless" interpretation of the dress code (specifically the denim) is pretty standard around my current office. Even though I personally kept it classy who might be in for some culture shock? That's be me.
  • Top: green scoopneck sweater, LOFT with a tank top underneath for the modesty (same sweater different color here and here)
  • Bottom: dark denim pencil skirt, Torrid (similar here)
  • Shoes & Accessoriesblack Madison Heights Tall Boots, Timberland via Zappos; brown tights, Merona; coin pearl necklace, V'ta jewelry; coin pearl earrings, borrowed from mom then altered; purple tote bag, Coach

Featured: Accredited Online Colleges

I'll be honest when I got an email this morning from accreditedonlinecolleges.com I thought it must be some sort of spam. You know, the ones that are like get your MA in three months online which translates to give us your money and we'll generate a degree! They are not that... they are a resource for people seeking online degrees and while academics are the main thing they also seek to inspire their students in other ways. Like this article on the top 50 fashion blogs for college students. Guess whose in that list...

What To Wear To An Interview

So, as I mentioned before I did a little looking before I landed this job and while I was going through all that I decided to catalog my interview outfits. I figured it would be a good lesson for anyone who isn't sure what to wear when that big day comes.

In November I had an interview with another non-profit the same day as a job fair. I just swapped the cardigan I was wearing for a the suit jacket and it was a done deal. That day I was just happy I wasn't expected back in the office... In the end it wasn't the job for me (we were both on the same page about that) but, at least I got a little interview practice.
  • Topivory shirt with crochet embellishment, LOFT; black pinstripe blazer, Calvin Klein via SYMS
  • Bottomblack pinstripe suit skirt, Calvin Klein via SYMS
  • Shoes & Accessoriesblack pumps, Steve Madden; pearl earrings, gift from Mom; black spy bag, Fendi (not pictured)

My next interview was about two weeks ago. Like I said before, things took a turn for the serious! I didn't want to wear the same old suit that I wear for every occasion that calls for a suit (see above) so I reached into my closet to find something different. This was one of the few moments where I was grateful for my past shopping transgressions! Years ago I had purchased this Isaac Mizrahi suit from Target on SUPER clearance (like less than $20 SUPER) and had never utilized it fully. My mom took in the skirt but, I never had a need for the jacket until now... I think it was a total winner!
  • Top: yellow ruffle collar shirt, LOFT; gray wool blazer, Isaac Mizrahi for Target
  • Bottomgray wool pencil skirt, Isaac Mizrahi for Target/hemmed by Mom
  • Shoes & Accessoriesblack pumps, Steve Madden; silver bead earrings, Tiffany & Co.dusty mauve butterfly tote, GAP (not pictured)

My second interview for my new job occurred on the same day that NYC was hit with 19 inches of snow. Thanks snow! I think this suit was the one thing that went right because I didn't worry at all about the cold or wetness just how I was going to make it there on time... thankfully I got a very early start and BF was home to help dig the car out and I drove since the bulk of NYC's public transportation was shut down/delayed/who knew.
  • Toporange dolman sleeve top, Xhiliration for Target; navy pinstripe blazer, Tahari via Loehmanns
  • Bottom: navy pinstripe pants, Tahari via Loehmanns
  • Shoes & Accessoriesblack Madison Heights Tall Boots, Timberland via Zappos; pearl earrings, gift from mom; dusty mauve butterfly tote, GAP (not pictured)

To sum it all up, here are some thing that I now know undoubtedly to be true about what to wear when interviewing:
  • You cannot go wrong with a suit, ever.
  • That being said, it doesn't have to be an expensive suit just a well made one.
  • When it comes to accessories: the simpler the better.
  • Boots are OK when there are almost two feet of snow on the ground.
  • A solid bright color top really makes you shine.

February 7, 2011: Ladies Make Some Noise If You Wanna Be My Replacement

Today I have alot on my work plate, I am going to be interviewing candidates to fill my role where I work when I leave this Friday. I can't believe it's all happening so quickly, I feel like I just gave my notice yesterday instead of a week ago. That being said I am hoping to find someone to replace me before I go even though my boss says I'm irreplaceable, awww...

I am keeping it more professional today (AKA wearing a jacket) because I want to make a serious impression on the people who I meet. As my last week working in a business casual environment continues I might push that to it's limit as the week goes on! No, I don't think the teal tights count...
  • Top: coral embellished tank top, LOFT via Mom; khaki safari jacket, LOFT
  • Bottom: brown jersey knit skirt, Old Navy
  • Shoes & Accessories: brown pumps, Candies via Kohl's;  teal tights, Comfort Choice/Christmas gift from Cousin V (on sale here); tiger's eye earrings, Citygirl Accessories; brown Loeffler Randall bag, Target (same bag different color here

February 4, 2011: Support The Cause

As I mentioned in my FBFF post I will be taking part in raising awareness about heart disease this month by joining these lovely ladies in wearing red on Fridays in February. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. It is also a leading cause of disability among women so we need to be aware of it and stay healthy! I'm talking to you hips...

I have a confession to make. I didn't get to my reservation on Wednesday... BF is having some dental stuff done that is interfering with eating but, we are going tonight! I got Restaurant Week reservations at a nice steakhouse in midtown (hence no jeans) and I would like to take the opportunity to celebrate some of the good things that have been happening.
  • Top: gray turtleneck sweater, GAP
  • Bottom: black really skinny pants, GAP
  • Shoes & Acessoriesred patent flat American Eagle, Payless;  silver bead earrings, Tiffany & Co.; black Spy Bag, Fendi

FBFF: Being Part Of The Main Event

1. With all the blogging events out there how do you determine which ones to participate in and which ones to avoid?

I honestly haven't come across anything that I wouldn't be or haven't been a part of except for the 30 for 30. The idea of limiting myself that much actually freaks me out. It might be weird considering how I limited myself to shopping only in my closet for one year but, I never said I was absolutely not going to shop for anything new and I have a ton of clothes! It seems like it could be fun but, I don't think it's for me right now.

2. Be honest, have you ever jumped on the bandwagon of some blogging movement/event for the wrong reasons? How did that turn out?

I don't think so. I have a few things in the works now though so we will see if any of them pan out in a less than ideal way... I like the "events" because they give even more structure to what I am doing. Sometimes I look at my closet jam packed full of clothes and think, "What am I going to wear?" but, if I need to focus on a certain color or pattern it makes it easier. It's like a mini vaca for my fashion brain!

3. How do you give your own flair to a blog event while still maintaining the general mission and purpose?

Well first of all I don't think pick things that are unrelated. Everything I partake in is in some way linked to what I am doing ex: a pattern or clothing style I like, a cause I support. I didn't do the pink for breast cancer awareness month because I wasn't sure how I was going to pull it of (kind of like the 30 for 30) and I like to see things through to the end but, I am doing the red on Fridays in February to support heart disease awareness to test the waters. Maybe next October you will see me in head to toe pink all month long!

4. When determining the best content for your blog what criterion do you keep in mind?

I think about what I would want to read and how this new thing is related to what I have already done. I also try to assess if it's feasible for me to complete the task at hand because like I said before I like to see things through to the end.

5. While everything will not suit your blog, how do you try and support your fellow bloggers who are participating in something worthwhile but not your style?

I comment, comment, comment... I have been going crazy trying to keep up and support the 30 for 30 peeps, there are so many of you!

February 3, 2011: On The Bus

Lydia from Chic on the Cheap is wearing yellow this week and I thought I would join in! Hopefully it will coax the sun out of hiding and we can move past this winter junk... It seemed like the perfect time to bust out this lovely tweed skirt that I purchased while on vaca in Cali. I'm glad I got to wear it because apparently it was a one time only thing... I'm going to officially blame it on shoddy workmanship but, some part of me can't help feeling that my hips might have been the culprit. Actually, they admitted it to me and they don't lie! Sorry, couldn't help myself...
  • Topyellow scoopneck sweater, LOFT with a tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Bottom: rainbow tweed skirt, Lafayette 148 via Saks

Review and Giveaway: eShakti.com

When the people from eShakti contacted me about doing a review for them I was more than happy to oblige because I have head nothing but, great things. They want to make every customer look her absolute best by providing amazing trendy styles and a wide variety of fabrics and color choices in all sizes from 0-26. eShakti ensures the best possible fit and fall by providing all customers with the ability to personalize any item, and when I say personalize I mean bust out the tape measure. You can have a dress made to your exact measurements or request the removal or addition of details so your selection is most flattering for you.  At eShakti, a woman can find exactly what she wants - no compromise. She can ask for the fabric, color, body, styling and sizing that she likes. Never again will a woman have to hear that her size is not available.

On top of all those great things their choices are seemingly endless and evolving. I say that only because when I revisted their website today I noticed all new choices that weren't there a week ago! They have some absolutely gorgeous dresses; so many of them reminded me of things from Anthropologie that would cost twice as much or more! With all the amazing options it really was a difficult decision to make, I even put it to a vote with some of my besties and in the end this was the dress that I selected.
I didn't do exact body measurements but, their size chart is very accurate. It feels like this dress was made for me! I did, however, request the addition of my favorite thing...

That's right... they put pockets in for me! And they are at the perfect height for me!! Even with the modifications it was still quick shipping. I am super satisfied with the dress and the customer service. The only issue (and I would be remiss if I didn't note it) is that the zipper is defective. I feel like it probably just came from a bad batch and if I had actually purchased the dress there would be a simple, no hassle, money-back guarantee on returns. Since I didn't I will probably have to have it replaced by a tailor, O Well...

Now for the fun part: eShakti has been generous enough to offer one of you lucky readers a $20 credit for anything on their website including (of course) custom orders. This giveaway will be until February 10, 2011 and is open to all readers in the US! I will pick the winner via Excel/random.org. Here are the rules: become a follower in Google (if you aren't already) and leave a comment on this post letting me know what you would spend the credit on... Don't forget to add your email so I can contact you! Keep in mind that this is just one of a few fun things I have going on this month there is more to come but, I digress... For bonus entries:
  • 1 bonus entry - "Like" 260 Days, No Repeats on Facebook. Leave another comment letting me know you did this.

The Roundup: 9 Months, 3 Months Left

Wow, today is a day of revelations! I just realized that I am nearing the end of my one year of wearing no repeated outfits to work, time flies... With everything that has happened in recent weeks I don't have a cool summary for you of the past nine months like I did at three months or six months but, I will say this: there were no purchases, no repeats, and February is shaping up to be a month of surprises/good things for everyone, including you!

February 2, 2011: The Show Must Go On

Even though there is an rain/ice storm happening outside I still have things to do today. Especially since, I officially gave my notice yesterday. (It went well, YAY) I have an epic to do list from my boss so I can get him caught up on all the stuff I am responsible for and naturally there is a job fair today. On top of that (and despite the fact that I missed my first two reservations, thanks snow) it is NYC Restaurant Week again! I have reservations tonight and Friday which I am hoping to keep!

So, what's a girl to do when there a million different things on her plate? Throw on a dress of course! I had spotted this one on the Newport News website a few years ago. I thought it was lovely but, way expensive plus, I'm not a fan of ordering without trying on so I let it go... While I was at the thrift store with my mom I spotted it on the rack just begging to be snatched up by us. One of the things that I hadn't noticed (or had forgotten) was that is had some crazy bell sleeves... so not my style! Mom took care of that with her mad sewing skills and now the dress is just right. I decided to pair it with orange tights for a bunch of reasons: it's cold, they're awesome, and I am going to be heading into a super corporate environment in a week and a half.  I don't think orange tights will work and I'm a little nervous about that. Yes, that is what I am most nervous about and some other stuff but, I digress... If you work in a corporate office how do you dress? Even if you don't do you have any tips for me?

  • Top: beige multicolored dress, Newport News via Unique Thrift Store with a tank top underneath for the modesty
  • Shoes & Accessoriesblack Madison Heights Tall Boots, Timberland via Zappos; orange tights, Comfort Choice/Christmas gift from Cousin V (same tights different color on sale here); green jade earrings, Elizabeth Showers Vintage; blue Foley + Corrina City Clutch, gifted via Plaza Too

February 1, 2011: Regression

The snow pile that I was standing on felt like it was 8 or 9 feet in the air. BF said I was probably on 5 feet so, we'll make a compromise and call it 6 feet, that's the top of a tree behind me! There are piles like this all over the place and it is lame, I'm so over it!

Although I was prepping for a serious discussion with my boss I could not resist the allure of skinny pants tucked into fuzzy boots. Especially since it was wintry mixing all day yesterday, there was an awesome beat...
  • Toppink flutter trim blouse, LOFT/birthday gift from Mom; gray flyaway cardigan, New York & Company
  • Bottomblack really skinny pants, GAP/gift from BF
  • Shoes & Accessoriesblack Ringo Star snow boots, courtesy of Cougar; silver bead earrings, Tiffany & Co.silver bag, L.A.M.B via Loehmanns

Update: I Complete You Product Challenge

So I have knocked a few more off the list! Deodorant is, of course, necessary. O, not for you? Well... you smell. This colder than normal winter is also making lotion a critical item, my skin is really taking a beating! Is it the same for you or do you have another essential winter item in your beauty arsenal?

January 31, 2011: Dress For Success

Monday I went to work on a mission, I was going to give my two weeks notice. No, not on a whim; I got a new job! I have actually been look for a while sporadically but, recently it took a turn for the serious and within a week or two I was going on first and second round interviews and apparently acing them. More on that later though...

I was super nervous about giving my notice for a whole bunch of reasons like what if my boss gets mad at me or what is he offers me more money to stay (which wouldn't work) or what if he gets super sad? More importantly though, what if he gets mad at me? I was still hoping for a recommendation on top of the fact that I genuinely like my boss and want to stay BFF4L!

So, in an effort to calm my nerves I did that thing I do... got dressed. I know we've talked about this before but, I would just like to reiterate my firm belief in the fact that when you look put together you exude more confidence and in turn feel more confident of yourself or at least I do. So animal print mixed with animal print and killer heels in the snow it was. Too bad he was on vacation yesterday.
  • Top: purple v-neck sweater, H&M; leopard tank top underneath for the modesty, Express
  • Bottom ivory and black animal print pencil skirt, LOFT/birthday gift from BF's mom
  • Shoes & Accessories: black pumps, Candies via Kohl's; gray tights, We Love Colors; gray labradorite earrings, Pennyweights; silver bag, L.A.M.B via Loehmanns

A New Addition

I would just like to introduce you to the newest member of the 260 Days, No Repeats team. That's right, a new laptop! No one from the school contacted me about my lost HP and without a decent computer I have been a bit disconnected from the world. That is until now... I don't want to bore you with the technical specs but, I am happy with it and more technologically savvy BF is happy with it as well! I would just like to take a moment and say he is the BESTEST BF ever since he was the one who actually footed the bill for this little baby, love him! On another largely positve note I was able to access alot of my back-ed up files from my external hardrive without any issues, back it up people!

January 26/28, 2011: Catching Up

So as you all know last weekend was pretty lousy for me. Thankfully the week to follow was filled with some seriously good things despite all the other junk. More to come on that later...

Wednesday was cold, kind of like the day before that and the day before that. Now let me tell you how I really feel... this cold is never going to end. I'm ready for you now spring, I really am! I am trying not to fall into the cozy style faux pas of skinnies tucked into snow boots every day but, it's SO hard. Do you have any advice on how to fight this? I welcome suggestions...

Items from this outfit are previously seen and remixed here, here, here, here, and here.

Thursday I was hip deep in snow when I left my apartment so... I stayed home. Thankfully so did BF and we dug out the car for my Friday trek to work. I had a job fair scheduled so I really wanted to make it into the office and off to the fair. The outfit was a little on the casual side for job fairs but, had a mentioned it was cold? Also, it was Friday and I hate to give up my denim. I sit behind a table anyway so no one really sees my legs anyway. Although, when I walked in someone mistook me for a student, awkward... I wouldn't wear this ensemble to a job fair
  • Top: cream, yellow, and brown argyle sweater, GAP; orange tank top underneath, New York and Company
  • Bottom: double waistband denim trouser tailored by me, LOFT Christmas Gift
  • Shoes & Accessories: brown suede boots, Chinese Laundry via DSW; pearl earrings, birthday gift from Mom via Macy's; dusty mauve butterfly tote, GAP

FBFF: Surf It, Scroll It, Pose It, Click It... Technologic

1. What technology do you use in blogging? (computer, camera, video, camera, tripod, etc...)

Well I have some pretty decent cameras: SONY DSC-H3 and Canon Rebel DSLR. The Sony is a point an shoot but, the pictures are amazing quality even though it is "only" 8.1 MP. It also has 10x Optical Zoom! I didn't know what that meant in the beginning either but, it comes in handy. That camera is the one that is used more when BF takes my pictures because I like the way they come out better. The Canon is also amazing but, I like it better when I use it. I'll take a photographer over a tripod anyday but, I have one of the latter as well. I had a computer until is was left behind, found, and apparently stolen last weekend... now I am using my old school laptop.

2. What computer and online technology do you use? (blogging system, photo storage, photo editing tools, etc..)

I had a HP, and can't remember the specifics. I use blogger and I'm pretty satisfied with it. With that all of my pictures are stored in Picasa but, I also keep kept them on the hard drive of my computer. I edit the shots with Microsoft Picture Editor for basic stuff and Picnik when I need to add text  but, that is rare.

3. What is your process for taking pictures?

The process is definitely evolving. In the beginning it was me and a stack of shoe boxes situated precariously on top of a chair in my hallway plus the timer. Then BF got me a tripod which helped. Then I decided I wanted to take outdoor pictures and I am too much of a chicken to haul my tripod out there like some other awesome bloggers so I asked BF to start taking the pictures. Originally that meant everyday before or after work heading downstairs to take pictures. He was not a fan and it was really not that efficient so, now we have been trying out picture taking Sunday. So far so good except I need to check the weather for the week before I decide what I'm wearing.

4. When it comes to backdrops for your photos what do you consider? Do you scout locations or shoot the same spot daily?

I don't scout locations but, I try to change it up a little. There are alot of nice places around the building where I live. Maybe I should go further but, it's cold now and I don't want to go outside at all... In the spring/summer I plan on trying to be more adventurous.

5. If you could splurge and get one new piece of equipment what would you be buying?

I would get some awesome software like Adobe Photoshop, that wouldn't really help the picture taking persay but, it would make editing or creating graphics alot more fun!

Check out everyone else's answers at ModlyChic!

January 25, 2011: Everybody, Everywhere Loves Stripes

Breton Stripes to be more specific! Here's a little history on that if you are unfamiliar. And here's a little history on stripes and myself: I love stripes but, was always told that more voluptuous ladies (like myself) should avoid them like the plague, "They will make you look broader, more masculine, wider, fatter, etc..." I get it but, I still love them. Lesson over...

If you are nervous about those well known pitfalls a small, thin stripe works better than a bold, wide one. Also adding accessories, like a chunky necklace or fun scarf, can break up the line that the stripes create. Lastly they don't always have to be black or navy. You could wear a brighter color (yellow, red, etc.) and since the contrast is not as stark the horizontal line is less noticeable. How do you like to wear your stripes?
  • Top: black and white striped long sleeved t-shirt, Proenza Schouler for Target
  • Bottom: gray really skinny pants, GAP
  • Shoes & Accessories: black Ringo Star snow boot, courtesy of Cougar; black and silver scarf, Old Navy/gift from BF's family; silver coin pearl necklace, V'ta; silver bead earrings, Tiffany & Co.; silver bag, L.A.M.B via Loehmanns

January 21, 2011: For A Minute... Finally

Sorry for the hiatus, you know... life happens. Posting might be a little sporadic because I have lost my laptop. Either way, I am trying my best to avoid that... life goes on. What? Yeah, you read right, the brand new one that I got just less than a year ago, I'm a jerk. I accidentally left it at a weekend recruiting event at Lehman College and when I called security to ask if anyone had turned it in they said no. Totally my fault but, if you're the person who found it AKA an HP in the Music Hall with this website as a homepage please email me and I will gladly retrieve it from you.

Moving along... there was snow on Friday by here, for a few hours which almost feels like the blink of an eye when you are indoors. There was not a ridiculous amount of snow but, enough to force me into boots again. Is anyone else tired of the snow or is it just me? Hmmm I see you hiding with your snowball, it must just be me.
  • Top: pink ruffle embellished t-shirt, LOFT (same shirt different color here) with a tank top underneath for the modesty; gray flyaway cardigan, New York and Company
