February 25, 2011: You Were The One I Loved, The One Thing That I Tried To Hold On To

Sorry for being so MIA things have been a little hectic around here; new jobs are crazy! I will be catching up as quickly as I can. Anyway... remember how I had said there would be no more Friday jeans for me well, that wasn't entirely accurate. The new office where I am does a charity day one Friday a month where if you donate to a worthy cause you can delight in denim. Sufficed to say I had no problem finding a few bucks especially because it was rainy and gross outside. Money can buy happiness... at least in terms of corporate casual Friday.

One cause that I was unfortunately lax about this month was wearing red to promote heart health. There were a few days where I did but, not on Fridays. I tried to stick with it for the last Friday of the month especially after I found a donation kit from the American Heart Association in my new desk. My new boss informed me that they always send something and to just toss it because that wasn't a chosen charity for 2011 (she's not as rough as she sounds, I promise.) In the kit there was a bag of red dress pins so I snagged one for myself. I have lots of extras so, if you interested please email me. I'd be happy to send one your way (US addresses only)

On another note, I miscounted when I said I had three months left. Really this personal style challenge comes to a close on April 1, 2011 since it started (way back in the day) on April 1, 2010. So that means that this is the last month. I know I can't believe it either.

April 1, 2011: April Fools

In actuality I've been wearing the same outfit everyday for the past year, I just like to take pictures of myself! Not really... Sorry, I have no (good) silly little joke to play on you guys. I'm the worst at April Fools.

This sweater was an awesome find at Re-Dress on the day that I played dress up (see my Facebook page.) That excursion wasn't all about crazy blanket pants and maribou feather trimmed sweaters! I was happy to leave with something I could wear to work. What are some of your favorite thrift store finds?
  • Top: pink argyle sweater, IZOD via ReDress
  • Bottom: gray pants, New York and Company
  • Shoes & Accessories black ruffle embellished flats, Audrey Brooke via DSW; pearl earrings, Mom via Macy's; gray le-dix/motorcycle bag, Balenciaga (not pictured)

April 1, 2010

I love shopping as much as the next girl but, times are tough and even though the man says things are getting better I'm just not seeing it yet. Thankfully, I am employed but, working in an office (HR at that) there is definitely a business-casual standard that I need to meet when I dress for work in the morning. At the same time, I don't want to show up everyday in the same outfit. So, what's a girl to do about it? In-debt herself further to have all the latest things, take on extra jobs to make up the gap, borrow, steal, or make do with what she has? I will take the latter!

I have a pretty large closet... and another one for shoes. Sufficed to say I have ALOT of clothes. The vast majority of them are work appropriate so, I was thinking that I should be able to come up with enough combinations of clothes to last me for at least a year or more utilizing what I have. A different outfit for work everyday, hence 260 since that's about how many work days there are in a year. It sounds very daunting but, I think I'm up for the challenge Occasionally I might get a gift certificate, go shopping with my mom (who always buys me something *love ya mom*) or buy something myself but, it would definitely be something I have a need for since I will be hyper aware of what I have in my closet. As a person who did a significant amount of research in college I feel the need to define my terms. What I mean by an outfit is a different combination of top and bottoms (ex: Day 1 Top A and Bottom A, Day 2: Top B and Bottom A). This does not include shoes, accessories, or handbags. But, I will show them to you for the fun of it!

My goal with this is not to show off how much clothes I have or even that I can put a stylish outfit together. It is simply to show myself and others that you can make great things with what you already have not just "make-do" You don't have to go to the store and buy a whole new outfit for an event (even though that is fun) you might be able to find a dress in your closet with the tags still on it (yes, that has happened to me). And for all those times that you throw up you hands and say, "I have nothing to wear!!" I want to show that you probably do have something you haven't seen all the potential in the things you already own. Another thing that I want to show myself, and I suppose everyone could learn from it, is the use-value of my clothes (ex: basic black ballet flats that cost $12.99 are much more valuable than a prom dress that costs $199.99) I can agree that there are basic pieces that should be of higher quality because you will wear them more but, the trendy stuff that you could pay a fortune store in designer boutiques is better purchased somewhere like Target because it will be out of style next season.

Now, lets get down to business.
  • Top: yellow ruffle front blouse from Ann Taylor Loft
  • Bottom: gray pencil skirt from New York & Company (high use-value item I bet)
  • Shoes & Accessories: brown/black snake embossed ballet flats from Target and an amazing carved bone and turquoise necklace. I will also be throwing all my crap in a patent leather purple Coach purse (not pictured).

I will try to take better pictures moving forward but, day one is very rushed. Check back tomorrow as this experiment continues!!!

April 4, 2011: Let's Get It Started

As you might have already surmised we are going into year two here at 260 Days, No Repeats. I'll talk about the specific rules as I wrap up Year 1 but, I'll let you in one of my main motivators: I still have things in my closet that I have not worn on the blog or on the weekends! It's crazy I know but, this shirt is the perfect example; I got it in August for my birthday and have been saving it for cooler weather. Well, Fall and Winter have passed and it was still hanging out in my closet (pun intended) passed over for other shirts of a gray persuasion. Well, that ended today! I am making an effort this week to focus on things that you have never seen here before. I warn you though, things could get a little crazy... Case and point this out of the box for me crazy wearing my necklace around my collar like some sort of sparkly tie thing but, what can I say? I was inspired by some of my fav other bloggers! What or Who inspires your out of the box wardrobe choices?
  • Top: gray pinstripe button down shirt, The Limited via The Unique Thrift Store
  • Bottom: black pencil skirt, Old Navy
  • Shoes & Accessoriesblack vintage patent leather pumps, Evan Picone via Unique Thrift Store; black and silver statement necklace, Etsy; onyx earrings, V'ta Jewelry; purple tote bag, Coach (not pictured)

One Year, No Repeats

I have finally gotten around to this monster of a post. I started this whole project with the idea that I had 260 posts ahead of me I was nervous about the number even more than the idea of not repeating an outfit. Now, 374+ posts later I am ready to try and wrap up this experience and all those posts in one potentially paltry (in comparison) collection of summations.

I won't put it all in pictures and links... In this past year I have worn 213 different outfits to work; 111 different tops, 10 blazer, 24 dresses, 37 skirts, 23 pairs of pant like things (slacks, bermudas, capris, gauchos, etc) and 6 pairs of jeans. Although I was not counting them in the outfit equation I have used 49 pairs of shoes, 23 necklaces, 38 pairs of earrings, 1 bracelet, and 16 handbags to spice up my outfits. That all being said, there are still things in my closet that you haven't seen! Here are some of my favorite outfits from each month but, I'll be honest there were some months where it was really hard to choose there were just so many good ones! Did you have any favorites?

April 2010

May 2010:

August 2010 (toughest month to pick a favorite):

September 2010:

November 2010:

February 2011:

I continued to post weekend/night out outfits when I thought they were noteworthy. Someone had commented that they used the weekends to repeat all the outfits that they wore during the week but, as you can see that is not the case for me! To be honest some days during the weekend I spend the entire time in sweats because I don't go anywhere and no one really wants to see pictures of that, do you?

I participated in a number of challenges and theme weeks which really broke up the monotony of remixing from my existing wardrobe. I also started participating in other blogger projects which helped in a similar and more consistent way.

One of the main challenges of this whole experience was not shopping. Once I started getting into the groove of remixing from my closet it was easy to go to the mall and walk away from cute clothes and "good" deals. I am no longer a recovering drug addict dating crack! If you don't understand watch this video and laugh. Or not, your choice but, I digress... I learned alot about the things that triggered my urge to shop (boredom, unhappy feelings) and also learned that stores put everything on sale all the time! There is no limited time only offer, it's such a scam. Armed with this new knowledge there were some months that I didn't buy anything at all and in this past year I ended up spending (drumroll, please) $148.60!!! It is such an extreme difference but, only those who knew me before 260 Days, No Repeats would understand the stark contrast.

That being said there were times when my Mom or other generous people gifted me with clothes or store credits. I am not going to look a gift horse in the mouth and tell them to stop. The point of this experience was not to avoid increasing the size of my wardrobe, it was for me to stop spending so much money on clothes. Those two things are definitely linked but, are not synonymous. That being said, I think moving forward I will be a little clearer about new or new to me things that enter my wardrobe.

One of the biggest (and unforeseen) challenges that arose was that I gained some alot of weight. A moment of  honesty, probably about 30/35 pounds. It is a challenge on so many levels! Of course there is the natural unhappiness that one feels when gaining weight but, there is also the discomfort I felt when getting in front of the camera to take the pictures. I see the difference in how I look in older pictures compared to now and I feel how my clothes fits. The most difficult part of this is that since I am trying not to shop I can't pick up a pair of black "fat" pants so I need to work with what I have. I just need to get to the gym!

I wasn't sure when I started 260 Days, No Repeats that it would grow as much as it has. I couldn't be happier! In the past year I have had 18,971 visitors and there have been 40,258 page views. I know that is something that other more popular bloggers experience in a month or so but, I'll take what I can get. Either way, it has been good enough to get some fun free goodies and sponsored giveaways which I'm sure we have all enjoyed! I have been thinking about connecting with some affiliates/monetizing the blog but, all in good time I guess...

Moving forward, as you might have guessed I will keep things going with year two! Excited? I am... Here are the new(er) rules. We're still following the original rules but, with a caveat for dresses. I wore some really fantastic dresses last year but, wasn't sure how to remix them all according to the rules. Then I realized, I am writing the rules! Have I mentioned, 2 + 2 = 4? Revelations people... but, I digress. All dresses are fair game as they are! I will try to mix it up with snazzy accessories but, don't feel the need to go out of my way all the time using dresses as skirts and so on...

Lastly I just wanted to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has been reading and following along. I wouldn't have stuck with this challenge as long if it wasn't for you! I appreciate everyone who has commented, collaborated with me, linked back to me, or just popped in. You are all fantastic!! I also want to say thank you to the people who are "behind the scenes" like BF and my family/friends. They help me with the everyday stuff  like pictures and outfit selection (ex: is this outfit too crazy?) but, also with the special situations that arise whether it's an event or just me stressing out! I love you all!!

April 5, 2011: Multiple Choice Question

You may think that you have seen this sweater before but, you would be mistaken you might have seen it's sister or maybe it's rando cousin but, this sweater is all new (to you at least.) As I've said before: I'm all about buying multiples. When you find something that works for you at a good price, why not? This sweater was no exception although, it is was a challenge for me to resist the preppy allure of argyle in general. Do you have a favorite clothing item that you buy in multiples? Or when you find something that is perfect for you do you snatch up as many as you can?
  • Top: black, gray, and white argyle sweater, Merona for Target (same sweater different color here, here, and here.)
  • Bottom: gray plaid pencil skirt, AB Studio from Mom via Kohl's
  • Shoes & Accessories: black pumps, Nine West; pearl earrings, pearl earrings, birthday gift from Mom via Macy's; purple tote bag, Coach (not pictured)
