February 8, 2012: Date Night, The Redux

I am going out tonight and I am exited because it's date night! Not with BF but, with my GF. We are headed downtown to a chic trendy restaurant for the seemingly endless Restaurant Week! I am eager to meet up with her and catch up on things it's been a while...

Because I am going to be meeting her downtown after work I figured this outfit should be a little easier to travel in. Stomping the pavement in New York City is a million times more comfy in flats (in leiu of a weird commuter shoes) and a great pair of pants. Also, there had been skirts this week so far and sometimes a girl just wants to wear pants...

On another note, now that I have realized that I can roll up the sleeves on most of my blazers I just can't stop! It instantly make an outfit more comfy when you roll up the sleeves on a stiff jacket. I feel like I have been missing out this whole time while holding off because I didn't have the perfect oversized boyfriend blazer and I refused to pick one up because it was too trendy/impermanent. I could have been rollin' with the blazers I had in my closet! Also 2 + 2 = 4 still, revelations!

February 7, 2012: Sticking With It

I came back!!! I'm holding to this new staggered schedule gosh darn-nit... Since picture taking Sunday happened this weekend I am able to reap the benefits of having my outfits all planned out when I wake up in the morning. It keeps me from wanting to rip my hair out because I can't find anything to wear or being too schlumpy because I just grab the first thing that I find but, most importantly it keeps me from being late to work... so far, so good.

One of the things that I have learned from this overall experience is that a sweater vest is a great was to cover up potential gaping in a button down shirt. I understand, this isn't a problem for everyone but, the inability to wear button down shirts without buttons popping open is an issue for me no matter what size I get. I know there are worse things but, it can be frustrating. While my high school dress code (you will never see me in a crested blazer ever!) has definitely put me off collared shirts as an everyday thing, every once and a while I think it might look nice. Thank goodness for sweater vests and fashion tape!

February 6, 2012: One of Those People

First I wanted to talk to you about what my new plans are for 260 Days, No Repeats. Although I have been experiencing some difficulties making my personal schedule and the blog work together I am committed to finding a way. That being said I would also like not to go crazy so, I have come up with a new plan and will only be posting three days a week. I will still put all my outfits up you just might be getting two scheduled post instead of something I do in the morning before I leave for work. Maybe as I fall into this new schedule then I will take it back up to five days a week, we shall see...

I also have a confession to make, I was one of those people who was up early ~~waiting~~ checking for Jason Wu for Target to be available online. When it was finally up and not giving me error messages (you still have some kinks to work out Target) this dress AKA the only thing that I was interested in was only available for purchase in store, figures. Because I am generally up at the crack of dawn on Sundays to get an early start on my groceries I figured I would swing by Target on the way and see if the dress was available. If you follow me on Twitter you might have noticed the escapades as I was politely battling the swarm of trendy ladies (and the occasional boyfriend) for anything related to Jason Wu.

After all the craziness I found what I was looking for on the discard rack in the dressing room. After I tried it on, decided it was perfect, and wandered around the store I decided it would be best to head out because people kept coming up to me and asking me if I was going to take the dress, awkward... I was curious to see the purses and the light blue striped skirt but, the people who had showed up before the store opened were still shopping, bartering, and checking out in droves with carts full of the good stuff. It was really disappointing overall but, I'm really glad I found what I was looking for!

While I am excited to wear this new dress because it's ~~a symbol of my victory~~ fabulous and comfy BF noted that it is a perfect color combo for the Giants Superbowl victory. While I am not much of a football fan (and those are pink stripes not whiter) I wonder if anyone else will make the same connection? I am even more excited to be able to wear it when the weather gets warmer with some fun sandals but, I digress... The bottom line is that the dress is perfect for work and the dinner plans I have after for starters.

Purchases & Acquisitions: January 2012

While things have been really crazy and I haven't had much time for blogging other things have fallen by the wayside as well like shopping. In that regard I have actually been in more of a purging mode which is good I guess... The only thing I did buy (and subsequently return) was a pair of flats from Macy's to replace these which I got rid of because there was a hole in the bottom (bummer) It was with a gift card so, it wouldn't have counted anyway...

This is the time of the year for me where things start to feel a little tight moneywise actually. After the Christmas craziness and in preparation for a slew of birthdays in March any extra moneys that I do normally have (however minimal) gets immediately stashed for that so, shopping is even more out of the question than normal and probably will remain that way for a while.

State of the Blog

I'm not dead! I'm sorry to drop of the face of the planet but, lots of things were going on IRL and I needed to deal. But, that's not the only reason... As you know this new job has made it difficult to maintain blogging at the level it was prior in terms of posts, commenting, and collaboration. I thought 2012 was going to bring a fresh new start and the way to make it work was going to come to me or that I was going to have less things to worry about IRL but, neither has been the case.

The most difficult thing to reconcile was that blogging which had been extremely enjoyable was starting to feel like a mandate. I don't blog for money or gifts I blog so I can share my journey with people and motivate myself to keep up with the challenges I have presented myself.

The point where I shut down a little was when I realized that there are other things that I want to do in life (exercise more, learn spanish, go to grad school) and the way I was blogging before was postponing them because it's already eating up so much of my free time. That being said, I think they real eye opener was when I didn't want to the movies with BF because I needed to get a post up. Really?! Unacceptable. Time to reassess...

Now that I have bought you up to speed I need to say that I am not done! I thought maybe this would be it for me... no more post, no more comments, no more free stuff, no more fun times. No, I'm not ready for that either so next week comes a whole new method to blogging, hopefully it will help me find the balance I am looking for!

I could use some tips and tricks, how do you find time for blogging in your busy life?

I got more comments last week about what I was wearing to work that I have in a long time beginning with purple tights and continuing with this outfit. Apparently this fall color palette was so comment worthy that I had a full gamut of people give me their opinion about it. My favorite was a male co-worker of mine who told me that mustard yellow was his favorite color and that I was awesome for wearing it in the office; The new hire who called me a corporate bohemian and this quite girl who never speaks telling me that maroon and gold were her school colors was cool as well. I didn't even think of it when I got dressed but, these are my high school colors as well... awkward?

January 3, 2011: Best Foot Forward

Heading back to the office last week was bittersweet. On some level I was excited to be back at work getting the first quarter of 2012 off to a great start! On another level I really wanted to spend a few more days at home cleaning up after the Christmas whirlwind and resting to get my personal relationship with 2012 off to a great start! Work won, obvi...

I also wanted to get my wardrobe back into a fun space! The days before I left for Christmas I was grabbing whatever just so that I was wearing clothes to work. For shame, I know but, I digress... While rainbow tights were a norm in my wardrobe last fall and winter I haven't been as comfortable this time around; I work in a completely different type of environment now. That being said I figured purple wouldn't be a big deal, right?

Wrong(ish)!Wardrobe wise there wasn't anything bad about it (I'm HR and will stick with the dress code) but, I got alot of compliments/comments about my "crazy" colorful tights. It was a little wierd... What is something that you've worn to work that has garnered comments? Was it really that out of the box? Were you comfortable with all the attentions?

Sequins can be a difficult thing to pull off in the office but, it's not impossible; Especially when it's the day before Christmas weekend and a few people are showing up to the office in jeans even though it is clearly not jeans day, awkward... I thought the last day before the holiday weekend (and a few extra days off for ~~rest and relaxation~~ family gatherings) would be relatively relaxing but, it was pretty hectic! At least the comfort thing carried through.

Last Monday was my office holiday party and it was quite the shindig. My favorite Christmas song/album: I love the Carol of the Bells among many other traditional songs but, my favorite iteration of it was the way that Saks Fifth Avenue used it in their snowflake show a few years ago.

Purchases and Acquisitions: November 2011

I didn't forget about November purchases! There have just been lots of other things to focus on at the moment. Also, I was finding it difficult to own up to the fact that I purchased something this month when I was at Re/Dress NYC for the last time. It's crazy, I'm not necessarily trying not to shop I'm just trying to be aware of my shopping so I don't go overboard. The idea of buying something for no real reason other than that I liked it and I wanted it doesn't fit in with that thought process. During this overall experience I have become so stringent about my shopping ban that it was a hard thing to reconcile the $36.00 expense but, in the end I love dress so, it all worked out!

I also got a great Missoni shirt that I found buried in the sale rack at Target and the leopard Albertus Swanepole hat that lots of bloggers have. It's super stylish and I love it but, at the same time I feel like I should be a pimp, I digress...I'm still milking a Target gift card that my parents got me for my birthday so technically these were gifts!!

This month BF bought me some emergency pants from the GAP... it's a long story but, I needed them and the only option was the GAP. Don't get me wrong, I love their pants they just tend to be on the more expensive side of things when you don't have coupons of time to browse the sales rack. BF came to the rescue! He also got me some pants which I have already worn a few times and a fab dress which I am saving for a special occasion. No worries, you'll see it soon, like next week.

December 8, 2011: Dinner at Tiffany's

Thursday was definitely my favorite day last week! While the normal hum drum (work, commuting, etc) of my day to day still carried on after hours I went to an amazing event organized by a friend of mine at the Tiffany & Co. flagship store after (free) dinner at the Harvard Club. It was delish and the presentation that we heard was fantastic!

Tiffany & Co. has played a huge role in America's history! It's so much more that the little blue box. Did you know that they make the NFL Heismann trophy or that they designed the seal of the United States that is on the one dollar bill? They have created jewelry for presidents as far back as Abraham Lincoln! I also learned that they have a whole crew of jewelers working on the top floor of the Fifth Avenue store and everything they make is created in NY/NJ, no outsourcing.

What was even more amazing about the experience was that the entire store was empty. I can say that I have not been to every floor of the massive store on 5th Avenue because it is always so crowded but, without throngs of tourists it was easy to browse and see what they had to offer. Have you ever been to the Tiffany's store on Fifth Avenue? What did you think of it? While browsing I was even able to try on some really fantastic jewelry as I sipped wine and chatted with my friends. By the way, having something that costs as much as a condo or small house on your finger is very surreal.

I thought Thanksgiving was kicking my butt but, it had nothing on December...

Last Tuesday BF and I decided to grab dinner and a movie.It might not sound like the most exciting thing but, it was nice to break away from the daily routine and change it up. Also, taking a break from the Christmas prep crazies was welcome because I'm not sure when the next opportunity to do that will be. I love it when a clothing item does double duty! A dress that can be a shirt or skirt, a suit that can be worn as separates, or a top that has jewelry like embellishments. That was exactly what drew me to this sweater when I stopped by Loehmanns with my Mom while running holiday errands. Thankfully my Mommy is amazing and picked it up for me!

Is it just me or is it hard to shop like crazy for other people without being tempted to pick something up for yourself!? I have been successful in curbing my spending by avoiding stores on the regular. I don't need to shop at LOFT or Target more than once a month. O no wait I do, it's Christmas. Wish me luck... Maybe I can use some of your tricks. How do you keep your spending in check?

Trying To Keep Up!

Ok, I know, what was it that I was saying about not falling behind? I'll be honest. Thanksgiving (and other related things) are totally kicking my butt! I am setting myself up for epic blog posting failure if I can't get it together...

I don't mean to be so hard on myself with the seemingly overwhelming amount of self loathing I am just frustrated by the fact that I have so many great ideas and things I want to say about what I'm wearing, how it fits in with my day, or other related things but, I can't even get one post published.

I've got plans for the rest of the month! A calendar that I am going to try to stick with. We;ll see how that goes. How would you go about doing things differently? I have really enjoyed myself for the past year and a half and would love to keep going for year three (crazy?) but, I need to find a different way to make it all come together.

I worked from home on November 14, 2011(love it) but, I was in the office for all the days leading up to Thanksgiving.

FBFF: I Am Grateful For...

I love taking part in this traditional FBFF in the spirit of Thanksgiving. It is so easy to forget about when we are bombarded by Christmas mid-October. I have a lot of things to be thankful for (it's honestly overwhelming when I think about it) and it's nice to take a moment to stop and reflect on it. In no particular order here it is!

My family is AMAZING. They make me laugh, they no longer make me cry (those angsty teenage years were rough)... it's a beautiful thing! I love that I am able to call my mom, dad, or brother up on the phone and share the silliest things about my day or just check in and see how they are doing. I am so grateful that I live so near to them that if I need a mom hug, or some secret family recipe chicken soup my parents are 15 minutes away to give me those things.

I am so thankful that my brother is one of my best friends and I can talk to him about anything, that we can laugh about anything, and that we have vowed to always stay this close.

I love that I have found best friends in my extended family. I have a decent amount of cousins but, only a handful that I have been able to forge close relationships with. It doesn't matter how far we are from each other or even how often we speak we always remain close and I am so thankful for that.

In these though economic times I am so happy to be able to make ends meet without selling a kidney on the black market. It might seem like an exaggeration but, with the economic climate we find ourselves in and the serious student loans/credit card bills I incurred while in school I am so happy that I have a job that allows me to manage them which works for right now.
My friends... all two of them (just kidding) they crack me up! I love being able to surround myself with like minded friends and have the best times with a pen, a piece of tape, and a q-tip or nothing at all...

I'm not going to get super emotional about how much I love BF but, I will say that I am so thankfull to have him in my life. We have been together for almost eight years (crazy) and we laugh with each other everyday... also mushy love things!

My health is honestly a point of contention sometimes but, honestly it could be SO much worse. I really won't get into the nitty gritty but, I'm glad that I'm able to manage whatever health nonsense I have going on with just diet changes, trips to the doctor, and eye drops...
I love when I am reminded to take time and notice the little things. Pink clouds anyone?

I know this might sound cheesy, I am so grateful for YOU the people who read 260 Days, No Repeats. Just knowing that you are here definitely keeps me coming back to the computer to post ~~daily~~ as often as I can. It has helped me realize alot of things about my style, my body, and my wallet which is more helpful than you could realize.

While I posting all sorts of good stuff last week I missed out on my last two outfits. No worries, there were pictures. I am dedicated this month to not falling behind. If I can't make it through November/Thanksgiving how will I survive the upcoming ~~doom~~ holidays?

Last week on Thursday I went to a Connecticut university to do some on campus interviewing. I wanted to be comfortable (yoga pants?) for the long drive but, also wanted to be professional (sigh, no yoga pants) when I got there. Now only was I meeting with some students I was also meeting with my contact in career services so, I needed to make a good impression for sure. I think everything went well! Also, was trying out a new background... what do you think? Less court house for sure...

I like to smell nice! I swear I have been using other things too I have just gotten very good at not using more than I need. I guess deodarent is one of those things that doesn't get rationed out as stringently or that I wasn't overusing to being with. I would go with that latter...

Sorry for the delay, I wasn't falling off the face of the earth again I promise... there were posts! But, let's have a moment of honesty about what did happen in terms of outfit posts: I kind of HATED Wednesday's look. You might ask, "Why would you wear it out of the house then? Also, why do you not like it, I think it looks ok!" to which I would answer "It's a long story..."

Baisically, I picked out all of my outfits for the week but, didn't end up taking pictures in advance or trying anything on so when Wednesday morning rolled aroung and this outfit was a FAIL I didn't really have time to change into something else. Why was it a fail? First of all the shirt was way too short which wouldn't have been a huge problem if the pants hadn't been super tight. Lastly, while these shoes were a great find initally they have stretched to the point where they are difficult to walk in as in, I trip over my own feet! I might have to say goodbye to them unless someone knows how to shrink shoes...

Sufficed to say I was uncomfortable and will never be putting those items together again beyond my personal style challenge. What do you do when your outfit is uncomfortable do you run out at lunch and buy something new, go home and change, or tuff it out for the rest of the day?

FBFF: Sans Makeup + BONUS Giveaway!

Honestly, I ~~never~~ rarely ever wear makeup anymore. Can you tell in my everyday pics? Maybe a little? Fine, be that way... I was more nervous about taking this picture because of my left eye which is now always slightly closed and a little wonky (thanks, eye drama!) Can you tell? Yeah, I know.

Anyway, when I was very young I used to think that makeup was a really glamorous thing that the grown ups got to partake in and I didn't because I was too little. There was definitely one hilarious occasions (that I have seen pictures of) where I snuck into someones purse while everyone socialized at a family gathering and absconded with red lipstick which I promptly began to apply it to my whole face sort of like this:

I was a little too young to have the technique down but, there was time to figure it out...

That was one of my earliest encounters with makeup and I can't really say that I loved it or didn't because I'm pretty sure I was 1 or 2. Throughout my youth watching my Mom apply her blush and pink lipstick or my grandmother heat up her eye pencil with a lighter and then put it on after her green eye shadow while I was growing up made me excited to be able to try it someday!

When I was in high school and had ~~some~~ a little autonomy I used to wear alot of makeup; foundation, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, blush, lip liner, lip gloss... you name it, it was probably on my face. The real irony of that was the fact that I had amazing skin and really didn't need all that nonsense. Even more ironic is that the fact that now I am a "grown up" and don't wear makeup I have pretty consistent acne problems, what's up with that?

Acne and all I still don't want to take from my time from my regular morning routine to put makeup on. Granted, I don't wear a ton of stuff now (dabs of concealer, spray foundation, eye shadow, mascara, blush, and lip gloss) but, I still don't want to have to deal with it. I think the most important thing is that I am ok with it; I don't NEED makeup everyday but, if I feel like putting it on for special occasions or events that's fine...

On a related note, in the past few weeks I have been to a few events where makeup was a main component of the goodie bags which amounts to about $160 worth of products! Since I don't really wear makeup I wanted to pass them on to you instead of throwing them away... So here is what's in the proverbial bag because they don't all fit in the bag that is pictured:

November 8, 2011: Everybody, Everywhere Has Colored Tights

When colored tights came up at the theme for this month over at Everybody, Everywear I knew that I had this in the bag. Remember rainbow tights week? Yeah... I'm excited to break the stretchy goodness out of hibernation! Unfortunately, it is uncommonly warm today. Why not have a snow storm then an almost 70° day within a few weeks of each other? It makes total sense to me but, I might need to hold off on breaking out the rest for a little while longer...

November 7, 2011: Back To School

The time of year where everyone heads back to the classroom has passed or so I thought; I am going back to college today! Let me explain... while working with an assortment of local colleges to set up recruiting events for my company I naturally reached out to my alma mater. After having many lovely conversations with the people in career services one of them invited me back to speak at an event about job search tactics for upcoming liberal arts graduates. I was more than happy to oblige!

On a related note, this dress makes me feel like a teacher (completely unintentional, I swear). I think my 7th grade teacher had one just like it... she had serious style! I got this dress during one of my final trips to Re/Dress NYC. They will be closing their doors in a few weeks and I wanted to take advantage of this great store while I can. I took my Mom because she has never been and needed to experience it before the final party. The dress had some wicked shoulder pads (which I removed) and after seeing it in pictures I think it needs to be hemmed but, there was something about the weird pattern (and pockets) that drew me in. Perhaps it was hypnotic suggestion, it's the perfect pattern for that; You are getting sleepy... You really love this dress... Excellent!

November 4, 2011: Why Midi?

This has been a fun theme week, don't you agree? While it has been enjoyable I think I have been playing it safe for the most part. I really wanted to push myself out of my ever shifting comfort zone and try a trend that I'm not really a huge fan of: the midi skirt.

I think they are an extremely unflattering style unless you are tall with super long legs. Not that shorter/non leggy people can't make it work but, it is a challenge I have very little desire to make an attempt at, until now... Since I wasn't going to buy anything new for this week (or in general) I decided to attempt a faux midi by wearing my Monif C Converitble Dress lower on my hips which I think worked out well but, if you could see how I wrapped the 9 ft. sashes around myself to keep them in check you would probably laugh; my torso looks like a stylin' mummy!

Let me continue by saying that I am not a short person (5'8 ish on most days) but, I think that this length of skirt makes me look short and there isn't really a great way to combat other than skyscraper heels which I wasn't in the mood for. Do I think I look bad? No. I just don't think it is flattering which is what I want my daily attire to be! Are there any trends that you are finding look great on other people, just not on you?

Wicked Vintage

Two nights ago I spent the evening hanging out with lots of fashionable bloggers at A Little Wicked boutique downtown. Touted as “the chicer way of doing vintage” A Little Wicked is a streamlined store filled with handpicked and thoughtful finds. It's a nice change from the normal vintage shopping experience where you can find yourself combing through racks for hours and hours just to hope to find something that is legitimately vintage and works for you.

Stop by the store, located at 279 Houston Street btwn. Clinton & Suffolk, especially in the coming weeks as they debut their holiday picks! Think gorgeous glam and sexy sparkles which is holiday dressing in a nut shell! Many of the trends this fall make me think of a more classic style and lace is definitely one of them. The other thing that lace reminds me of is a doily. Thankfully, this shirt channels the classic style and not the latter but, despite that it is still a challenging piece to wear to work. Completely see through tops are not what I think of when I imagine professional business attire. O, you do? Then I should be ok... I rocked this top at my last job no problem but, this new office is decidedly more conservative. We shall see how it goes. What other items of clothing do you think push the corporate dress code?
